Sending TXT Messages Offline in Android 9?

I have an issue where text messages are not sending unless I tap the message to switch to SMS/MMS.

I don't have my phone connected to the internet so I assume that is why. The messages are not MMS.

What setting do I need to change to have text messages send offline?

  • Text messages shouldn't require you to be online in order to text someone.

Is this for all text messages you're sending, or just selected numbers? What phone are you using?

    • It never used to be so. Has been happening for a few weeks now. I'm wondering if an app has taken over the process. It is all text messages. I'm using an Alcatel 3.

      • Do you recall installing any apps that might have taken over this functionality? Also dumb question, but have you restarted the phone?

        • I do remember being asked the question relating to calls/text but can't remember anything really or what app it was.

  • +1

If you go into Settings / Apps and Notifications / Advanced / Default Apps - what is "SMS app" set to?

    • Phone app is "Phone (System)"
      SMS app is "Messages"

  • Are you using Google Messages? Sounds like you might have enabled their 'Chat' option (like Apple's iMessage).

    • Nothing called "Google Messages" in apps.

      • It is just called Messages and should have a royal blue icon with a white speech bubble on it.

    • This is the icon https://joyofandroid.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Google-M…
Will try disable the app and see how that goes.
…. Oh no that just deleted all my messages… I react too fast..
Edit… All good just enabled it, restart phone and everything back to normal. Now to look for the setting you suggested.

  • Do you have RCS enabled? It's called "chat features" in Google's Messages app. Try disabling it.

  • Just been through all the apps and nothing with the word "Messages" other than "Messages" (the default app).
I do have Telegram and WhatsApp which are my only messaging apps that I know of. Not sure if they are doing it?

    • Telegram sounds like a likely culprit.

When I installed Signal (a similar app) it took over sending my SMS's But if Telegram had done the same thing to you I would have expected it to be listed as the "SMS App" in your default apps setting.

Nevertheless, worth de-installing it, just to make sure?

  • In Google Messages settings / advanced the only things enabled are "Auto-download MMS" and "Receive service messages".
Nothing about "chat", "chat features" or "RCS".

  • What's your phone model and who is your provider?
