I may be making an unexpected trip to Melbourne during the week for a family emergency that has arisen. If by chance I need an overnight stop can anyone recommend somewhere within a reasonable distance of the airport that is clean and quiet and has comfy beds?

Depends on how you are going to get around in Melbourne. Often a car is a good bet (not bed) given the distance from the airport from melb. That then gives you more flexibility with accommodation annd the amount you save often pays most of the car rental cost for a day.
Eg for wed 21/3 rate at formule1 Fawkner (15 mins from airport - if you drive) $79 vs airport on same night $109 so $30 towards cost of car and you have car to get around etc
Ok, thankyou both. Yes, now that you mention it ozpete, car is probably the better one to prioritise. I seem to recall we can get a good rate on car hire because of a group thing of some sort with hubby's employer. TomTom will DEFINITELY be my best friend for a couple of days.

There is the f1 motel right next to the airport which is normally around 79-110 there is a cabin/caravan park about 5-10 mins from airport but will probly still charge you 60-70 + if you want to get to the city cheap there is a public bus that runs from the airport to frankston. It costs around $5 one way full fare into the city & trip takes about 1 hour only thing is you need to jump off the bus at broadmeadows & board the train to the city. If you google motels in mickleham road westmeadows you may find a few.
