Needing to Spend $2500, eBay Gift Cards Are They Instant and Worth The Effort?

Hi,

Needing a sanity check here.

I am making a $2500 ebay purchase this morning and exploring the discounted ebay giftcards but given the amount and time to issue i dont want to tie up funds if it all goes pear shaped.

Was originally looking at the Coles 10% off prepaid $250 Mastercard deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/657702?) saving 9%

And the using the RedeemyourGiftcard 5% discount to buy the Celebration Giftcard to convert to Ebay giftcard. But how fast do they issue and is there a limit?

Finally, I intend on entering the Ebay giftcard code into the Ebay Buy it now.

Thought and hurdles?

Thanks in advance.

Hurdles - there is a maximum limit on number of giftcard you can redeem per order. Something like 6 or 8. So you'll need to get high denomination.

    Edit: https://pages.ebay.com.au/ebay-gift-cards-terms/

No more than a total of $1,500 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per transaction, no more than a total of $2,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per day, and no more than a total of $5,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per calendar month. Further, you may only redeem a maximum of eight Gift Cards in any single transaction (and fewer if you are redeeming Gift Cards in combination with other redemption codes, such as coupons or vouchers).

  • What are you buying on eBay for $2,500? Have you considered warranty/ACL coverage if required?

    • new BBQ.
Warranty and ACL should not be impacted by using GC. (unless i missing something)

Not affected by GC but if it's a private seller, international seller or dodgy third party on eBay that'll disappear in a couple of months then you're stuck. Assuming it's a reputable local company then.

Have you read the eBay Gift Cards Terms & Conditions? https://pages.ebay.com.au/ebay-gift-cards-terms/

      • Seems like a crazy thing to buy on eBay.

        • True, but you know how OzBargain goes.

The retailer has a brick and morter store as well as an online presence complimented by an eBay store.

Fortunately for me the item became eligible overnight for 10% off.

Shipping was almost $100 but the seller had over $500 worth of inclusions that I planned on buying anyway, and this was a cleaner deal.than trying to secure a discount with Sydney based retailers that are less willing to secure the sale.

          • @GLO: Fair enough, would be worth calling them to see if they would match or beat the price off eBay, they should as it would save them fees.

tl;dr There may be a lot of hurdles with that approach.

As others have already pointed out, please be aware of clause 11 of the eBay gift card terms and conditions:

    • No more than a total of $1,500 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per transaction, no more than a total of $2,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per day, and no more than a total of $5,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per calendar month. That’s a good idea, but you need to keep in mind your local stores may have already sold out of these cards. (They were selling like hotcakes at my local store not long after opening early this morning.) You may have to rely on stores restocking these cards during the promotional period (and most stores may re-stock during the promotion, but no one will be able to tell you when).

The staff at my local store was strictly enforcing the 5 Gift Cards per customer rule, so that’s another hurdle to consider!

Btw, the discount is 7.48% for a $250 Coles Gift Mastercard, not 9%.

And the using the RedeemyourGiftcard 5% discount to buy the Celebration Giftcard to convert to Ebay giftcard. But how fast do they issue and is there a limit?

Redeem Your Gift Card’s only accepted payment method is bank transfer. (That is not a typo.) They also charge a $1 purchase fee for each gift card you purchase.

Redeem Your Gift Card’s bank account (thankfully) supports Osko, so if you send the payment from a bank account with Osko during business hours, you should receive your gift card a few hours after sending payment (which is my experience), otherwise it will be delivered the next day.

I’m not aware of any purchase limits on Redeem Your Gift Card.

You will struggle to use the Coles Gift Mastercards on discount / cashback gift card portals, as payment processors are increasingly refusing prepaid gift cards. For example, other OzBargainers have said that you cannot use Coles Gift Mastercards on Suncorp Benefits or Shopback anymore (which are two popular gift card portals).

Even if you could use your Coles Gift Mastercards to pay for eBay gift cards, you may still struggle to stay with the eBay gift card limits. For example, the highest denomination of eBay or Swap Celebration gift cards sold at Coles, Woolworths or BIG W is $100. PayPal also only sells eBay gift cards with a maximum denomination of $100.
