How Do I Stop Windows 10 Automatically Rebooting after an Update?

I would be working on my PC and a popup will show saying update complete and time for a reboot. Don't even realise it's updating half the time.

Rather than give me the option of rebooting later it forces a restart. Frustrating as <profanity> when you're mid way through work.

Tried googling solutions to no avail - turning to the OzB tech gods for help.

Hold Windows Key + I together to open the Settings Window. Navigate to Updates & Security and enable "Adjust active hour to reduce disruptions". This will stop any auto updates from restarting the PC.

If it's a work issued device then you probably missed the deadline for a deployed update or went pass the grace period. In this instance the computer will restart automatically.

    • Thanks a million for this!

Yes it’s a work pc so during business hours it’s only on. Just want it to update on shutdown or start to be honest.

      • Same, this was how 7 worked with updates and it is a more convenient setup.

    • I've honestly had this cause more problems.

If you set you active hours to end at, say, midnight but you're gaming on a Saturday night, it'll ignore you and restart anyway.

Click on the advanced option and check whether or not "Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update…" is enabled.

  • Manually reboot it before the computer gets a chance to?
Generally only forces a restart when you've delayed it for too long.
Happens on my work computer much to my frustration when i lose work, but i get it it's a security policy to make sure it works with all the systems effectively.
