Ducted Aircon - Mitsubishi Electric Vs Daikin

Hi guys, looking for some personal experiences.

I’m currently finalising the plans for my new build in Melbourne west. My builder’s installer has provided very expensive quotes so I’m planning to get it installed post handover.

House is a single storey with about 260sqm of living space that needs to be heated/cooled. I will have 3-phase power so considering the following models:

Mitsubishi Electric PEA-RP200WJA 19kW with 12 outlets/7 zones with MyAir controller + ITC sensors for $20,950 (this is from a Diamond dealer)

Daikin Premium Inverter FDYQ200LCV1 20kW with 12 outlets/7 zones with MyAir controller + ITC sensors for $18,710

Daikin “standard” inverter is -$1000. From what I’ve read there isn’t much difference between standard and premium except that it can be retrofitted which doesn’t apply to my case.

Has anyone used these specific models and willing to share their experience? Also any pointers on pricing would be helpful too!

Thank you!

We have FDYQ250 and don’t like it. Takes long to turn on, especially heating will blow cold breeze for some time. Has only 2 speeds and wall controllers are designed by 3 year old. Previously had Fujitsu, it wasn’t perfect but much better.

Daikin warranty is a joke too from my experience.

Edit: apparently Daikin inverter is semi-decent at most and only allows reducing power to about 60% and not less. Here are some discussions on whirlpool about it.

    • Hey I think you missed the link to Whirlpool. Can you please repost it?

We are doing something similar. Getting quotes for Eastern suburbs. New home being constructed - 233 sqm house, single storey, tile, single phase. We also looking at Mitsubishi, Daikin and Actron at the moment.

Looking at electric heating and cooling instead of gas with add on cooling. Gonna install Solar as well.

    • Good to hear! Have you received any quotes so far? Any particular reason for considering Actron? I mean I know it’s a famous brand but for one reason or the other, I haven’t been able to get quotes for it.

      • I'm in the midst of getting 4-5 quotes so I'll keep U posted. However, my folks use an Actron system and I have used a Daikin before. I actually like the Actron interface and controllers better than the MyAir Daikin. However, price wise the Daikin is cheaper.

Mitsubishi I've heard is good but no experience with them as of yet so can't comment.

        • Are you considering a third-party zoning system like MyAir or iZone?

Check out the Aussie made Actron.
We have a 350 sq mt house with 7 zones, reverse cycle, wireless controllers, and it cost about $20k all up.
    Very happy with the unit(s)
Add on - we are in the Eastern suburbs of Melb

Installing post hand over vs installing during build also has two different end appearances.

With post build, you'll be limited to where you can place the external units plus there'll likely be external conduits for water discharge etc.

Including the units as part of the build will hide the piping and give yiu more flexibility as to where the compressors go etc. As example, mine are tucked behind my external back wall out of sight.

  • mitsubishi electric or mitsubishi heavy electric?

    • Mitsubishi Electric. The other is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

      • I was close.

At work (hundreds of units) we use either MHI or Daikin. IIRC, Daikin have there own warranty support and MHI farm it out

I've never had any good experiences with these ducted units. I'd say just go for individual split systems in each room. Keep it simple. Easier to replace if anything goes wrong. Cheaper to service. If something goes gangbusters, you won't lose your entire heating/cooling until it's fixed.

I did 6 individual split system units for around $18K installed, ~5kW for the open areas and ~3kW for bedrooms. Works a charm and super energy efficient as well.

Downside is aesthetics with wall units and multiple external units.

  • We just recently had a Daikin FDYA160AV1 Single Phase Premium with 12 outlets/ 2 zones installed, we went premium for slightly better cooling, and we could mount the external unit further away from our bedrooms, the unit is very quite, we hear the internal fan more than the external unit. While renovating, the place we stayed at had a small 10kw Mitsubishi electric, the external unit was noisy, supposedly the Heavy Industries are meant to to be quieter/more reliable.

The only thing I don't like is the zone controller, its clunky, especially after using the Brivis touch controller, they do have an option for controlling via a mobile app.

    • Did you get it installed in Vic, if you don't mind me asking? Also, why only 2 zones with 12 outlets?

    • We are also consider the single phase Daikin FDYA160AV1 with 12 outlets and probably 2-3 zones, how much roughly were you quoted? Did you upgrade the Myair with temperature sensors?

    • Hi Mccann25 can you please tell me how much this cost you all up. I’m pretty close just waiting on qoutes.

  • Hi yes, we are in Melbourne, as for 2 zones, our house is a fairly small single story (at least compared to today's standards), one half of the house is open kitchen/living, the other half bedrooms/bathrooms/on-suite, there seemed no point to break it further down, we heat bedrooms or living area's or sometimes both, plus its easier for kids and wife to use :)

    • Thanks. Can you please PM me your installer's details?

  • Sure, let me find details, I remember they are based in Bacchus Marsh. Will post details on forum if you like.

  • These are the guys, https://www.gjbradding.com.au/

  • Love my Daikin !

  • I have individual Mitsubishi systems in our second story which was a large extension. It’s a older place with gas ducted downstairs. Our upstairs can be like the Mawson Station in winter and Marble Bar in summer (Melb). Had these systems for many years and they have never missed a beat. Very quiet, efficient and work very well. Check and compare the specs, one thing I suggest you check is the noise rating if you have them in bedrooms. Placement of the outside units can be a real eye saw as Installers will always use the easiest location. I had them placed under a deck and on the service side of the house at ground level. Cost a bit more to plumb and gas but worth it to also shift the noise from them away.
