Deta Grid Connect Smart Light Switch Reseting Sporadically, Unlinking Form Google Home

We have a few of the Deta smart switches from Bunnings which we've had for around a year and a half now. Sporadically they will reset of their own accord - I had one particular switch reset 3 times in the last 3 weeks.

They will work ok for weeks/mths at a time but occasionally drop out. When they drop out, the Grid Connect app reports "Room 1 light switch has been removed from "Location" due to device reset". We also get a google notification on our phone saying something to the effect of "[email protected] has unlinked XX light switch from your home". The switches then require re-pairing to the wifi network/Grid Connect app and then we have to go back into the Google Home app to set up our "routines" (allowing specific light scenes) all over again. This is inconvenient and gets tiring after a while and is preventing us from upgrading more of our home switches.

Thinking it might be a bug with these switches, has anyone else had a similar experience? I've updated the firmware on all of them which btw for anyone else that uses these switches, the latest FW enables the little indicator light to remain lit which is really handy for finding the switch at night.

  • My grid connect downlights like to occasionally reset themselves. Same as you, every few weeks. I will come home and my lights will be in reset mode. Fun times.

  • does DETA have a local tech support team? Or is it all overseas based?

  • I've got some experience in these as I flash my own firmware onto them.

I can say with the board being an ESP8266 embedded, it smells like a firmware bug.

    • Interesting, do you have more details on the process and have you found the switches to be more reliable with custom FW?

They are absolutely more reliable with custom FW, plus you do away with the requirement to have a live internet connection to turn your lights on and off - which I always thought was completely stupid in the first place.

I use Tasmota, have a look at their page to see if your device is supported - be sure to carefully check the model # because there are probably multiple revisions.

ESPHome is another option, but I don't have any experience with that particular package, they're equally as user friendly from what I've heard though.

  • To their credit, they seem to have a decent level of product support. The app just got updated and they seem to be pushing FW updates. The in-app support also works with a lead time of 1-2 days. Previously when I brought this issue up, they suggested taking it back to Bunnings with the electrician's report to get a new one. I didn't do that, ended up with 2 other switches doing the same thing so it doesn't look like it's an isolated incident.

    • Bunnings with the electrician's report to get a new one

ooof, what if you did it yourself, eg had the plug base already in the ceiling?

      • You should be fine if it's a plug-in model, just take it back to bunnings and ask for a new one. Although like I was explaining above, I think they all have the same issue. Give it a go though and see how you go, maybe the new ones are from a different batch.

  • I have the same unit and same issue which I worked out only occurs if you use the physical buttons on the power point! Soon as I do, the app pipes up and removes it. Crazy. Have logged a case with grid connect / Deta

  • Mine have been just fine interestingly… Hopefully I haven't jinxed it

    • What type switch do you have?

      • A single gang and a 4 gang

  • My 4 button switch just unlinked again recently. Contacted them and got the standard response that I got in the past - "did you ensure no one at home held down the buttons and accidentally put it in pairing mode?"

They eventually said they couldn't replicate the problem (I wouldn't have expected them to, considering how sporadic this issue is) and that I'd have to lodge a warranty claim with proof of an electricians certificate. :/

  • Ugh mine did it again with zero touches

No way am I going to tolerate being told to chase warranty when clearly thereโ€™s a product level flaw

It is basically resetting itself to factory default pairing mode periodically

  • I've the same dropping out issues . And a friend dose also.
I don't get home for a month at a time and I'm trying to switch water on.

It's something to do with interet dropping out then just removes it.

I'm using the push button single switch plate. The GPO adapter is still hang in there. It just the single switch plate that I find plays up. It's further away from router also.

Need a good system so any suggestions..?
Other brands . Flashing firmware working.

    Thanx for time.

  • I don't think it has to do with internet dropping out. You can confirm this by switching your router off and on.

Gronk mentioned custom firmware a few posts up. We're on a pretty good run recently, it's been a few months with nothing unlinking just yet. Though now that I've said this…

  • Has anyone had any action around this? I have just purchased three brand new out door Deta power points. 2 have been installed a week and dropped out twice.

  • Bahaah yes just as I commented in march that everything was fine… I get a notification on my phone this morning saying that one switch has unlinked. Would be about 6 months since it last unlinked. @Spewdog there have not been new developments that I'm aware of. Have you checked to see that your switches have the latest firmware?

  • +1

@highon2str - yeah they prompted to update so I did. Funnily the times it happened were both at 56 minutes past the hour which I thought was interesting. Been a few days and we are ok so far. Will continue to monitor.

Really kills the value these provide if they do this ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Just came across this. Is there any better and more reliable smart light switch that work without requires to much fiddling with firmware flashing and all?
