OzBargain's Most Recommended Desk Chair and a Stand in Desk Mat?

Hi All,

I have been searching a good deal for a Desk chair and a Stand in Desk Mat for my home personal study setup. I mostly spend nearly 7-8 hours for my study and I prefer to stand and study at home. Please recommend a good ergonomic chair and a Stand in Desk mat. I know Herman Miller is the best, but I can't afford it.

My budget for the desk chair is ~$500 and Stand in desk mat is ~$100.

Anyone is using this chair or any reviews about this chair.

I recommend the Herman Miller ones. Exp but good. But you really need to go have a sit. I find the IKEA ones surprisingly decent too.

OP just find a chair that fits you, within your budget and feel comfortable with.

Herman Miller chairs are great (the best? I don't know) for office environment as its fits most body shapes and easily adjustable for everyone. You don't need it unless your body shape changes every day, if you have the budget, why not.

    • Wanted to have opinion of the community, now as lockdown has been lifted in Sydney, I will go and check in shops. Thanks

Echoing other comments recommending Herman Miller chairs. If you trawl FB marketplace and gumtree you can occasionally snag an Aeron at a reasonable price - I've be able to get a few in the $450-550 range.

    • All HM are going above 1000 if it is 5 years old and is above ~800 if 10/15 years old..Its crazy

Think Ozb likes the Buro Metro or even Ikea Markus.

I would not buy HM new in AU… the inflation has made it even worse on top of the retailers playing hard to take my cash

I picked up my Mirra2 for 300$ from a shop via Gumtree last year who does most corporate maintenance / refurbs for them

it was pratically brand new - the shop was pretty reputable in what they do. Steelcase is pretty popular in 2nd hand too.

There is occassionally heaps of them in Gumtree and sometimes even a deal pops up here when some startup explodes

Small sizes especially for Aeron typically easy to find compared to say Size C on aeron.

I prerfer Mirra2 myself I think Aeron is overrated but you should go try test them first at shop

as to the rug under my mirra2 I just have this:

    https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/sanglaerka-rug-low-pile-butterf…

Most of these shops selling these higher end ergo-mesh (HM/Steelcase etc.) chairs just do big fitouts they don't like to deal with consumers thus pricing in AU reflects the niche for retail sale too in top of the usual AU small market retail and import pain tax.

Now if the HM Cosm in Rose Gold would hit the 2nd hand market that would be perfect.

    • Not a fan of Ikea Markus, exploring options now. Slowly tilting towards HM. Scouting FB and Gumtree for any quality HM Aeron. Lets see. Thanks

  • I am choosing between

Buro Alto (new Officeworks exclusive chair) – $299
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/buro-alto-…
    (tried in Officeworks)

Buro Metro (from winc) – $329 ($309 after new account 1st order discount)
    https://www.winc.com.au/main-catalogue-productdetail/buro-me…
(don't know where can I try it offline)

    and IKEA Markus – $229
    https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/markus-office-chair-vissle-dark…
    (tried in IKEA)

All of them have 10 year warranty
Buro Metro – Gaslift Lifetime Guarantee

Unfortunately can't compare all of them at the same time, same place. IKEA Markus feels pretty comfortable with less controls (not adjustable armrests - but they are on the right hight, non-retractable seat - seat is large enough, no need for this) and cheaper price.

    • Thanks mate for a detailed reply. Definitely I am going to check it out.

Tried the Alto and Markus today again and decided to get Markus from IKEA. Feels like back support is better and when you recline, the seat also slightly reclines together with the armrests unlike it is with Buro Alto - seat stays flat.
