Jamo E610 Bookshelf Speakers in Cherry - $175 Save 70% (RRP $599.00) + Postage ($30-$40)

70

Just noticed these. Don't get hung up with the RRP or the Brand Name HOWEVER these would probably be decent little speakers for a low-mid range 2-Ch System or for Computer use or you could even buy three pairs, add a sub and build yourself a cheap & decent little HT system! As always with speakers though, it's best to go listen to them somewhere and compare them with others before buying but at this price that's probably not essential.

Oh yeah, sorry… postage is about $30-$40 to most capitals.

    • $40 postage
    • 37.50 for me in melb metro area

    • For WA:

      $40.00 for each item
      plus
      $25.00 per shipment

      So $65, I guess.

      • Ouch! Sorry to all the WA'ers then :(

    • Ouch… and I was considering it before then…
Jamo is a Brand Name.. (Danish company) although I have half a thought that it's been bought out by the Chinese.

  • i was gonna say - grays - delivery ouch

  • These are a pretty old series (i have some floorstand E650 or 670 from memory) that were bought about 7-10 years ago..(back when I use to sell these ;) )
The cherry wood colour is a bit dated (wish I had gotten mine in black these days), but the sound from this series was quite good (which is why I bought them, and I couldnt afford the D series at the time…)

Very good value for money for that price and would generally better most bookshelves in that $ mark pretty easily..
as will most bookshelves these lack bass, but for about $200 its going to be a better choice than the basic no-name/wharfdale etc that fit into this price

    • "for about $200 its going to be a better choice than the basic no-name/wharfdale etc that fit into this price"

Agreed. Well put SBOB & thanks for the inside info.

I think this model is about 10 years old.

But speaker technology hasn't really changed in 10 years, just decoder tech.

      • though styling and models have so it was more to illustrate that this isnt 'latest model' material from Jamo..

        but you are correct..
excellent speakers from 10 years ago are still excellent today, assuming you havent blown them up or had your kid poke your tweeters in for fun ;)

      • Agreed. I still consider my 30 year old Yamaha NS-10s sweet to MY ears… but I personally like their 'brightness'. There's a reason they're still used as close-field monitor speakers in professional recording studios around the world but they have a love/hate following and when you listen to them it's obvious why ;)

I don't think speaker technology has changed much for 30-40+ years to be honest. Much of my vintage HiFi equipment easily out performs most mid range modern stuff but again to MY ears. Maybe I'm just going deaf tho :P

You can get powered speakers for less than that price.. check out M-Audio AV40 or Numark NPM5 from Amazon.com

Of course you can… but it all depends on what you like the sound of and need/want. Audio is an interesting beast like that, just because a pair of speakers cost $40,000 doesn't mean you'll like the sound they produce! Also, some people may already have a decent Amp that can produce better output than the cruddy little inbuilt amp in cheap powered speakers too. All very subjective of course but yeah if you're in the market for some passive bookshelfs then these may be perfect.

Yes, fully agree. I wouldve bought them 10 years ago when I used to mix and match my audio system, but with everything being compact and integrated these days, not many people would the need for these speakers. You either buy a home theatre system with the dvd/blu ray integrated into the amp, or you buy an amp with a good set of speakers. And if you were looking at replacing any of your speakers with these, the cherry colour wouldn't match..

Yeah, in this new world where people care more for bling, fashion and out-of-the-box convenience than sound quality I fear you're right but I have hope there are still those of us who still appreciate simplistic 2-Channel systems and separate components… no matter what the colour ;) Geez I sound old now!

You can build a pretty decent starter system using speakers like these and a nice little $250 Denon Receiver/Amp (via Euro Amazon) and grow the system to suit your needs instead of blowing money on everything at once and having it fail in 12 months time.

Then again you can also get incredible sound from proper 2nd hand Hifi gear from the 1980s if you do your research and know what to look out for Op shops & council collections can sometimes have audiophile grade gear for only around $20 a piece or FREE off the side of the road if you're super lucky. Believe me, I know ;)

which means your paying less for the speakers and adding a crappy in-built amp…
not really aimed at the same kind of system/listener..

  • iPads and iPhones are refreshed every year yet speakers stay the same!

I'm personally a fan of KRIX…made in Oz too :)

  • Please remember Grays often slug you with a buyer's premium of up to 15% on top of delivery. Doesn't look like it for these Jamo speakers though!

Caveat emptor - I suspect these may be counterfeit, as according to Jamo's website they have never had an E610 model. I've contacted Klipsch customer support for further details and will post here when they respond.

  • pair it with a behringer a500 amplifier (~$300) and a subwoofer and you will have the best a hifi system under $1000

    • I have a few cheapie Behringer Amps similar to the A500 and they offer amazing bang-for-buck value (awesome for cranking up at parties) but you can do a lot better in the clarity & distortion departments by buying a simple 2nd-hand stereo amp off eBay… especially with a $200-$300 budget! Obviously there are risks involved with 2nd hand gear but yeah even $100 will buy you a nice little Japanese 50WPC Stereo Amp with lower distortion specs that should make these cheapie speakers 'sing'. The Behringer would drive these speakers nice & hard though :P Rock on!
