PS5 Extended Storage Options

Can anyone help me understand the storage options for a PS5? I've got one for my son's birthday but just looking at the size of the games he will need more storage.

I'm just a little stumped about which one I need. Anyone give me some guidance?

    • Option 1) External HDD or SSDs work for PS4 games as well as PS5 storage but NOT PS5 game playback.

    This needs to be USB3.0 SuperSpeed and between 250 GB and 8 TB max. An SSD would load faster but regular HDD work too.

    • Option 2) An internal M.2 SSD would work for both PS4 and PS5 games playback.

    This needs to be a Gen 4 M.2 SSD and between 250 GB and 4 TB. You will need a heatsink and to be careful of physical sizes.

    He should not really need either unless playing huge games like Call of Duty.

      For option 1 a Samsung T5 is a great option. I’ve got a re-purposed WD Blue SSD in an enclosure.
