Summary of discussion from previous deals/things to consider
  1. Chinese/Brazilian version of this unit has better range due to extra amplifiers.
And you can buy those units from AliExpress/TaoBao/Banggood, and also potentially cheaper.
OpenWRT community discussion suggest to buy the Brazilian/Chinese version.

  2. It can be used as Access point and with multiple units can be combined to make a mesh.

  3. Some people commented about Chinese hardware, spyware, sends data to the CCP, 'new Chinese spy kit that you paid to get your self spied' etc.

  4. Some commented with concern that there is no USB port for media sharing

  5. Other comments about use cases, wherein, you most like won't saturate the bandwidth with the state of Internet connections we have(100mbps max usually). But if you have a NAS/media server at home and like to move files around/access content via WiFi, you will be able to take more advantage of the hardware.

Had the AX3 pro, it was fast but very unstable. For a home router, the least you want is to feel its existence as if you do feel it, it's down.

    • Hey @cliffj,
      Interesting to hear.
Was the issue with router rebooting/freezing or your internet connection dropping?
What kind of unstable issues did you experience? Do you know what firmware version were you using?
Asking because general reviews for this unit is really positive and would like to hear from an actual home user rather than reviewer.

      • +3

It disappeared from the network for no reason. It's really bizarre as the WIFI looked to be alright, but the computers connected to it could not reach each other and the router as well. After rebooting the router, the symptoms went away, so it's definitely the router the culprit. When it works, it's great. I initially had very positive impression regarding it as it's cheap and really really fast. But soon I experienced those problems, which are pretty random and I could not really find out a pattern. Soon I had enough and bought a much better and much more expensive one but never had issues since.

        • -1

I think the issue is your data got redirected to some strange server during this downtime.

          • +1

@kml22: Nope, no traffic could actually reach the router :(. it's not I could reach some or all websites etc, even a simple ping to the router would time out. If someone was really trying to spy on me, such thing would be last thing expected as it draws attention.

            • @[Deactivated]: Maybe a power point timer to restart at 3am every day would have been a money saver instead?

              • @plague69: I doubt if that would work. I manually rebooted the router around 15 minutes before a meeting as I was concerned it was going to fail in the middle of the meeting and it indeed froze in the middle of that meeting :(. Murphy's law I guess. That's was the last straw before I binned it.

    • +1

I used this for over 6 months as my main router. Rock Solid. Never had a stability issue or memory leak requiring a reboot. Regular updates every 2 months or so.

      • +1

Case by case, I might have just received a faulty one. I personally would not touch any Huawei consumer router anytime soon, they obviously had a quality control issue at least.

Isn't Huawei banned by the government?

    • +1

Yes, there banned by our Government for the Government department and our Telco, most people who neg you because lots of CCP supporter on Ozb.

      • They're all communist/wokester sympathisers

        • Doubt it. The second “C” in CCP is Charlatan and there’s little difference between eastern and western variants. Try “Panama Papers.”

        • There all*

Please use language that kml22 will understand.

    • +5

Yep, but I don't believe those claims were true. And even if those were true, we are already being spied by the Americans for sure.

      • +5

        Well, better American than CCP.

        • How is that better?

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: At least you don't get jailed for criticizing the government.

            • -1

@rdrooster: What are you referring to? I get confused as obviously you don't get jailed by criticizing Chinese government but in the meantime, you might get jailed for criticizing US government or AU government, just take a look at what happened to Julian Assange or ABC.

              • +7

@[Deactivated]: Julian Assange hacked US defence but lots of chinese people got jailed just because they criticized the govt for Falun Gong or Uyghurs. If you don't think it happens in china, well maybe you can try when the next time you visit china.

          • @[Deactivated]:

            How is that better?

Somewhat better, Americans and Australians are in an alliance. At very least both are democracies.

        • Hail America. Only dumb people will to give their personal info any anyone. So much for security. Similar analogy as giving personal info to Google rather than Facebook. Didn't your teacher tell you that your identity is your personal key.

          • @noramando: Being spied is bad. Seems to some people, being by whom can make it better or worse, so there is GOOD bad and BAD bad.

            • @[Deactivated]: thinking you have a choice in the matter just makes you look very stupid, sorry.

              • @BigKahunaBurger: Read through all my comments again… I think you just took my opinion the opposite way

    • +1

No surprises there after the Chinese government's cyber agencies massive spying, IP theft and industrial espionage activities. Governments banning them from critical comms infrastructure was really the only outcome. The CCP undermined trust in Chinese companies, then complained when people didn't trust them. A real shame as the companies would be good companies otherwise.

Have 3 of these at home in a mesh for about 12 months. Gigabit WiFi throughout, no issues, mesh hand over is a little slow.

    • They look like they have no heatsinks so I bet they get really hot to touch. Wouldn't surprise me if one smokes out eventually.

      • No they are not hot, I am not a heavy user, three or four devices steaming on average…

    • See that's the thing. 3x Unifi AP has okay hand-off but everything else is a bunch of crap (Not let the fanboys tell you otherwise). 2x Asus AP everything was great and hand-off was slow. All wired and not wireless mesh with shared 2G5G SSID.

  • I can't seem to apply thr discount code as it comes up only as 5% off. HELP!

  • I got an old netcomm NF10WV, quite a noob with routers/modem. Can anyone recommend any good modem/router? Would a router by itself be enough if I have nbn? Thanks in advance

    • +1

If you get FTTC at your address, then a router is enough. You will be supplied a NCD which acts as a modem. If you get FTTP, you don't need a router. Check what connection type is available at your address first with an ISP.

      • +2

You need a router for every connection type, did you meant that you don't need a modem with FTTP?

        • Yes. You're right. I mean you don't need a modem if you're on FTTP

      • I have FTTN. That means I need a modem and router?

        • +1

Yes. You need both if you're on FTTN or FTTB

I have been using this router for more than 6 months now, initially as AP, and then as main router, after my main Asus one failed.

For me it has been perfect, no issues at all, and I must say that my home network is quite busy, with a combination of NAS server, several IP Cameras, more than 15 wireless devices, Phones, ipads, laptops, desktops and gaming PCs, most of then running over WiFi 6 and 5.

Also, I have a the NBN Home Ultrafast (1000/50Mbps) plan with aussiebroadband.

As I said, no issues, rock solid, with over 200 Mbps from my MacBook air in the slowest points in a two levels townhouse, in most areas over 400Mbps.

Actually, I am ordering a second one to implement a mesh network because occasionally I need to connect some wired devices for troubleshoot and initial configuration.

And before someone starts pointing to the chinese CCP, I must say that I take my decisions about hardware based in evidences, not in political speculations.

Good day to everyone and I hope that my experience can help someone.

  • Bit side way question, I have FTTC connection and using Telstra smart modem 2. And wifi is very poor or not existing in far corner of house about 40m from router in straight line with few walls in between. So do I need mesh or I should get better NBN plan with higher speed( currently on belong 24mbps plan).

    • You need a second WiFi router or mesh. I'm using 2 telstra gen 2 smart modems with one at the other end of house. They work great and people pretty much give them away on gumtree or marketplace. Only problem is can you run a cable for the second telstra gen 2 modem.

      • No can't run cable….I also have second Telstra smart model sitting somewhere….
