Exterior Christmas Lights & Decorations (First XMAS)

Moved into my first home this year during a covid lockdown so this will be my first xmas in my new place.

I am looking at decorating the exterior of my single storey house, (misses going to take care of the interior).

I really don't know where to start looking, so many different stores and prices.

Those who put out the lights and decorations each year and are pros at this, can you recommend me some good lights and decorations that will last for some years.
I am going to start with small things, but I am unsure if Solar lighting beats powered lighting?

If you can post your links in the comments that would be great. I am in Melbourne, so Melbourne stores would also be a benefit.

Not sure budget wise, as lights seem to range a fair bit. I am a visual guy, so I would have preferred to check them out in-store but Retail will not open in Victoria until at least the 5th of November. Nothing too expensive but nothing too cheap. Just some good working lights and decorations.

Cheers

  • Do you have external powerpoints? Congrats on the purchase

We tried coles solar powered, they were alright.. for the fence

    • I am in the process of putting one at the front of the house, (FIL gonna install that). Might get him to put 2 at least:)
Maybe a combination is a good idea?

      Thanks:)

      • Proper waterproof wall mounted power points to the front good idea. The more the better. Get timers or have those points switched off from internal switch.

  • can you recommend me some good lights and decorations that will last for some years.

Well that excludes basically anything at Bunnings lol

It’s a literal Christmas miracle to last even 1 Xmas season.

    • 😂 Why are Bunnings lights so average?

At this stage do I just go to a Big W and try my luck with Mirabella?

      • Why are Bunnings lights so average?

        Get what u pay for.

The mirabella Genio festoons looks cool but idk how it holds up outside in the sun or near salt water

  • Practical tips:

*try to avoid solar powered ones, bundled solar panels in my experience are crap at best, although they are tempting since no real effort needed in planning cable layout. The panels are typically quite flimsy and aren’t made for long term exposure to Australian outdoors.

*if you go mains powered ones, be responsible with powering them, get a decent power board if it’s out of the weather for sure, or Bunnings various power board options especially around Xmas that are a power board with a weatherproof shell to protect. I always wonder how soon until my neighbour zaps himself, every year he has heaps of Xmas lights all through his yard and he just puts a bucket over the power boards to keep rain off it (not realising if it floods or there’s a drainage problem, there’s gonna be a real danger.

  • Try looking up Christmas lights stores

Avoid solar if you can. If your going to put stuff on the roof please make sure you get someone to hold ladder and where proper shoes.

Get yourself the waterproof powerboard boxes. You'll need alot of power boards and extension leads

Avoid blow up displays. Not suitable when it rains.

Blow mould displays are good for day and night display

    Start early

Start with one of these. Not necessarily this priced one.

Lesson 1. Build up slowly over time so you can learn what works for you.

Eg add a strand or two each year.
