I've used www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au/ several times and it seems to consistently give me the cheapest price I can find.

    From my experience:
    1) renting at the airport is always the most expensive
    2) prices can vary from location to location, despite renting with the same company - ie avis or thrifty
    3) Coupons or discount codes do not represent good value. All they do is give the appearance of a great discount. If you get a quote without a coupon and put in a coupon (ie from entertainment book) i often find them to be quite similar. All the coupon does is push the RRP up and still provide a similar price.
    4) Best coupons are the double upgrades
    5) some rental places you can bargain with
    6) do not take out the excess reduction through the rental company. take out your own domestic policy through someone like worldcare for $15 or if your credit card provides rental excess cover, use that.

      Definitely this.

Car hire company "excess reduction" typically costs you $20-25 per day. A 5-day single traveller insurance policy from http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/ is $40, and there are 10% or 15% discount codes you can use for this. They provide $4000 excess towards car rental claims.

Took a look at Worldcare too. Their quote is $31 for 5 days in Australia, including $3000 towards excess. Not sure where $15 came from?

      • Yeah I got $31 for one or $59 for 2.
rxjb please let me know how to get $15

        • sux my CBA platinum cr card only cover for international :(

  • just a general question..

lets suppose you get your provisional licence. can you go overseas and rent a car on a provisional licence which is 1 month old? (qld provisional licence, heading to nz).

Many car rental places require a minimum age of 21 or even 25 - best answer is to check the website of a major car rental agency like Avis or Hertz in NZ to get an idea of what to expect

http://www.autoslash.com/ is exactly what you are looking for.

They search publicly available discount codes, test them daily against your booking criteria, and automatically re-book if prices drop.

My vote goes to Red Spot. The insurance is bundled in the quote (which I found to be the cheapest). No excess fees. They dont check the vehicle before you pick it up and they dont check it after you drop it off. Just throw the keys on the desk and walk away… Very nice!!!

    • If you want, you can get a price match from alphacarhire. There might not be many benefits in you doing this, the only reason I suggest is because I rented with alphacarhire in 2010 and was really happy. The car I got was brand new (only had around 2000 kms on it), the service was A-one and they are a good company so less chances of you getting surprise shocks. Although, it might be the case for argus as well, its just that I do not have any experience with them. Good luck with everything though.

      • thanks but there are mixed reviews @alphacarhire when i google and they only includes 500km/day
