If you live in parts of Sydney and your tap water suddenly tastes and/or smells like dirt it's a known issue: https://www.sydneywater.com.au/SW/water-the-environment/how-…
"Customers in parts of west and north-western Sydney may be experiencing slight changes in taste and odour in their water supply. Sydney Water advises that the water still meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and remains safe to drink. Recent high-winds in the Warragamba catchment area have impacted raw water supply and we are working closely with Water NSW to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Sydney Water apologises for any inconvenience and thanks you for your patience while we work to resolve the issue."
Today I learned that Geosmin and Methylisoborneol (MIB) are naturally occurring compounds produced in some organisms (esp. algae) that have an earthy taste and odour at very low concentrations and together are responsible for the majority of foul tasting town water. You may already know geosmin for being a component in "the smell of rain". Apparently they're harmless but some smell sensitive people may get nausea and headaches.
It seems I taste these chemicals whenever I leave the capital cities.
Update:

I find flushing before I drink from the bowl assists with improving the tsste and odour of the water.
