Apple TV 2nd Gen - $88 @ DSE

85

Apple TV has been redesigned to be small in size but big on entertainment. Rent from the largest selection of HD movies – many available the same day they come out on DVD. Stream photos and music from your computer to your widescreen TV.

From the movie theatre to your home theatre.
No more waiting for DVDs or watching stale blockbusters on cable. With Apple TV, you get instant access to the hottest Hollywood titles and new releases – often the same day they come out on DVD. Popular movies are never out of stock and you can rent as many as you want. That's perfect for those spontaneous movie nights (or afternoons or mornings). Search by top movies, title or genre. Even read a quick movie review or watch the trailer. Once you find what you're looking for, simply press Play and in seconds, you're watching the opening credits with theater-like Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. SD rentals start at just $3.99 and HD rentals start at $4.99. You have 30 days to start watching and once you begin, you can watch as many times as you want in 48 hours.

The Internet's most wanted. Now on your HDTV.
Put down your mouse and grab a remote. In addition to movies and TV shows, Apple TV gives you access to some of your favourite Internet content – and makes it even more entertaining by giving it the movie-star treatment on your HDTV. Browse and play YouTube videos, watch your favourite HD podcasts and listen to Internet radio through your home entertainment speakers. Apple TV even lets you access Flickr photos and MobileMe galleries. From the biggest screen in the house.

Turn your TV into an HD photo album.
With Apple TV, every megapixel of every photo looks amazing. Big, bold and in glorious HD: It's the treatment your digital life deserves. So instead of huddling around a computer screen, you and your friends can relive memories from a comfy spot in your living room. Or add some life to the party with a photo slideshow. Select an album, pick a slideshow theme and finish it off with a soundtrack featuring music from your iTunes library.

Your music. Your speakers. The perfect duet.
You've got tons of music on your computer. But the best speakers in the house are part of your home theater system. Apple TV connects them without missing a beat. Your iTunes music library streams directly to Apple TV. So you can sit back, choose a tune and enjoy the music.

why buy 2nd gen when 3rd gen with faster chip and full HD is only $109 at apple.com
i sold my 2nd gen on ebay as soon as 3rd gen came out. the resell value for 2nd gen is dropping.

xbmc rocks if you have a gen 2

      • +1

xbmc rocks, but not so much on the atv. Don't get me wrong, it's better than iOS but I would recommend a wdtv or o!play or even the ac ryan player deal a few days ago, before atv.

        • -1

The first ATV (plus CrystalHD) is better than the ATV2 was for XBMC.

  • Will we be able to run XBMC on gen3 to run 1080p smoothly?

  • +1

Is it some kind of advertising? no stock, neg from me..

  • +5

3rd gen is $109 with a better processor. Not a bargain.

    • +1

This would have the remote too, but I'd go 3rd Gen as well.

      • We paid $13 for the remote, albeit a while ago & last item, @ OW.

Ever similar item includes a remote. Why go gaga just because Apple's does? :-/

    • +3

2nd gen is easier to jailbreak and install XBMC.
There's no other reason I'd be even remotely interested in an Apple TV unit.

$85 at Good Guys. I think JB too.

  • Is 3rd Gen out yet?

    interesting read here: http://www.macworld.com.au/features/apple-tv-third-generatio…

but I gotta agree, $88 for gen 2 is not a bargain.
gen 3 already on pre-order and out of stores in a few days (16th according to above story).

    • No deal.

  • been waiting for the new one so I rather spend the extra $20 :)

Don't post crap that no one wants anymore and you want to offload onto our hands. Especially a product from apple. This place is for bargains

If you're after the pure Apple TV functionality, you're better off waiting for the ATV3, however if you want to Jailbreak it and run XBMC, this is a good purchase - it could be a while before the ATV3 is jailbroken.

    • +3

      I give it a week.

    • Not a good purchase at DSE tho….they're more expensive then elsewhere….oh and they ran out - smells like bait advertising

The only real difference between the 2 and the 3 is 1080p and a few audio codecs.

Why on earth (until apple releases apps) do you need a faster chip? Is it going to help get through the menus faster?

I convert Avi's, and rip dvd's and Blurays via Handbrake to 720p 5.1 and stream them wirelessly all over the house. I have about 1.5tb of Movies and TV seasons in my iTunes Library on an external hard drive running through an iMac.

If I really want 1080p I am going to buy the Bluray from Amazon.co.uk rather than get jacked by iTunes and play it through a PS3 anyway.

Why all the negativity. All reviews say the difference is not huge. Apple only upgraded it to have 1080p movies instore as a competitive feature.

And if you start going on about how 1080p is so much better than 720p and you have anything smaller than a 60" screen, you are kidding yourself.

    • +4

by that reckoning no one needs to buy 1,080p TVs

face it, old is old and new is new… why waste your time with old unless there some outstanding feature in the old model (like xmbc)?

    • It really comes down to how far back you sit from the TV. I don't notice on my 40" TV approximately 8ft back, but on my 55" TV at the same distance, it's absolutely noticable - so for some, it makes sense to keep up with technology.

I'll be looking forward to XBMC after jailbreak to not only get a boost on MKV's, but to be able to take advantage of 1080p.
