Buying TV from Costco vs Sony directly?

hey folks, is there any advantage of buying from costco like extended warranty or easier return/replacement process over buying from Sony directly?

Also, would there be any issue down the line with warranty claiming if I use my friend's Costco account to buy the TV for myself?

Doesn't matter which Costco account you use as long as have receipt (or they maintain their subscription).

Anecdotally you're going to get both positive and negative feedback for both buying from Costco as well as Sony so doesn't really matter. Pick the one cheaper/more convenient for you.

I got great service from Sony on a TV bought from them directly that died 2 years 4 months in. They replaced it with an upgraded model and size within 3 business days with no fuss. They even sent me the new one before they collected the old one. Others have had really poor service from Sony support. You may or may not get the same level of service so not worth fussing about.

    • wow cheers for quick and great reply. So my friends account got to remain subscribed if they want to use Costco warranty?

Not if you have the printed receipt. Doesn't matter.

However, if you don't have a receipt or lose it, account purchases are linked to the Costco subscription. So you can claim warranty/return/etc without a receipt, provided you have access to the same account it was purchased on. They can track previous purchases.

        • hmmm some mixed answers here about the warranty and using different account, i should call tomorrow and check with them

  • Also one day when I was in store 1 of the large screen boxes fell down. Not sure about the condition of that one.. Same I suppose could happen to Sony stock

  • Costco will at a minimum offer the warranty that Sony does on the TV, but I imagine and from previous experience, the return to get a new one at Costco would be far easier.

I have returned quite a few items even without the receipt and it's always been super easy at Costco. Read here as it's important to note their warranty isn't forever, just a reasonable timeframe and at least the manufacturer period.

Also, would there be any issue down the line with warranty claiming if I use my friend's Costco account to buy the TV for myself?

Yes, your friend would have to return it.

    • what if i have the receipt?

Hmm I dunno… they’ve always asked for my membership card when I returned something.

I would imagine that they’d void it on the basis that it would go against their store policy as you aren’t supposed to let other people ship their with your card. Unless you could claim someone bought you a TV as a gift perhaps?

      • Last time a firend bought tiger rice cooker via my membership. Few months broken, Costco need the membership holder present on returning the rice cooker, but they accept any credit card (thus the friend's) to do the refund. I will buy fr Costco for your Sony. If for a non faulty return you change your mind eithin 90 day you can return it with Costco, doesn't matter you have used it.

If the price is same, I will always prefer to get stuff from retailer rather than manufacturer, that way you will have 2 points of contact for warranty support.

  • It is nice to bring something into a physical store to return if you need to. Not many Sony stores left I think.

  • When you buy from Costco, then you have Costco and Sony liable for the TV. If you bought from Sony you'd just have Sony be liable. Though I'd buy from Apple if it were an Apple devices if the price were euqal, they always have a clear 14 days return policy and free delivery.
