Gas Strut Lift Bed Feedback

Hi Just been told by the better half that she's wants storage with the next bed we get, any recommendations or feedback on the gas strut lift up beds ?
how have people found the ease of use ?
Have the gas struts held up well against wear and tear and use?

We bought the Metropolis gas lift bed from Forty Winks 13 years ago. It gets opened about 10 times a year (we mostly store Christmas stuff and winter jackets under there) but it's still as good as new. It's heavy to lift once the mattress and bedding is on, but not unmanageable, even for me with my limited mobility. We'd definitely get one again if we had to buy a new bed, but the way this one is going, it could outlive us both! ;)

Edited to add: depending on what you're planning to store, the beds with drawers might be more suitable. They hold less, but are far easier to access. As I said above, the gas lit ones are quite heavy once mattress and bedding are on, plus the bed comes untucked somewhat every time you lift it, so you need to remake the bed. Not a huge deal, just something to consider if you were planning on storing things that you'd want to access frequently.

My grandma used to have one back in Germany. It was full of stuff, kitchenware and stuff…for trade if there was a war again…

  • Have had one for about 6months now from Brosa furniture. So far so good. Bought for ~1k

  • When I was buying my new mattress I was considering one of these. Forty Winks told me that the mattress I was buying wasn’t suited toward the bowed slatted bed frames (with it without gas lift), and unfortunately the frame I liked had the bowed slats, so I didn’t upgrade my frame in the end.

Just something to keep in mind.

  • Didn't know they existed. Sounds like a neat idea.

The only downside I can see is the weight of the bed when moving it in, and I can only see 12 month warranties.

  • We have one and its okay. One thing to note is that they can be very tall, particularly if you load it with a thick mattress. Building it can be a pain and I’m not looking forward to moving the thing.

  • Got one in the caravan. Works a treat for storage of deep cell batteries, charger and blankets.

  • I’ve got one, as others have said it’s a pain in the ass to move, usually have to completely pull it apart given how tall the frame is so it’s very hard to move around corners and door frames in one piece.

We looked at a few and there is a wide price range from $300- $2000+ and ended up going with one around $1200 or so from Forty Winks as we didn’t want it to start falling apart and the build quality on the cheaper ones looked suspect.

The base that the mattress sits on from the Forty Winks one is super sturdy. Feels like a 2” thick plate of steel. Not actually sure what it is as it’s covered in fabric but solid as anything.

Living in an apartment when I first bought it, but would still buy another into the future for a place to store things out of sight, or of value as well. Not many thieves will think about lifting your bed.

  • we had one, it was pretty good. I agree that it was really hard to lift up/down (more down as you really gotta pull it)

  • Go and inspect them personally.. Some of them the timber is very underrated IMWO, when daughter tilted her bed after setting up mattress on it you could see the wood flexing badly… it wasnt going to last, so it went back.

  • We have had two king single. One is a metal frame lifts from the end. The other has an MDF base and lifts from the side. Both work well, use it to lift the mattress to make the bed a bit easier. Storage under doesn’t get used a lot because… it doesn’t.

    Other option is drawers.

Recommend storage of little used items for any version. It’s not that convenient.

  • Cheer much appreciated for the fantastic feed back🙌🙌,,I' did a quick scan of retailers and
tried a couple in person at domayne also one in 40winks the steel one, found them medium heavy to lift and drop, they seemed to have fairly light weight mattresses on them too.
We've a sleeping duck mattress which I can tell is alot heavier ,so personal opinion at moment I'm a bit worried about 12 month warranty , flipping it up possibly weekly with our heavier mattress ,will definitely give it a workout and me personally I'm fairly average strength and middle age a brief test .The 5ft 2in wife certainly more so.
Might just be worth getting a drawer one,in our circumstances.Loose Abit more storage but easier to get at.

  • Hello we are looking at sleeping duck mattress and would also like q gaslift king bed. Can I ask what you went with.

Anyone have a sleeping duck on a gas lift bed?

    • Sorry mate,we just bought a bed from Ikea with storage drawers havnt set it up yet but hopefully do the trick
