Just Hopped on Gumtree after Ages and It's Flooded with Cash Converters and Third Party Cash Converters!

I mainly use FB Marketplace to sell (and sometimes buy) things these days, but decided to hop on Gumtree for a change. Holy crap it is filled with Cash Converters - both the legitimate business and the private / third-party cash converters. And all of their ads are promoted to the top. You have to skip like 6-10 cash converters before finding any genuine private buyer/seller.

Does anyone know why, or whether these services are actually used?

FB Marketplace isn't perfect but I do prefer it much more over Gumtree now. And gone are the days of selling things on eBay, thank god. No need to pay ridiculous fees and shipping costs.

Pretty simple, they pay to be promoted to the top

I much prefer Marketplace as you can at least get a glimpse of the person you are interacting with.

Gumtree is just a haven for scammers and businesses - kinda what eBay became.

    Maybe it's your location OP?

I can't remember the last time I've seen a Cash Converters ad on Gumtree.

    • I've seen the occasional ad by Cash Converters and a few other second-hand good stores (I assume that's what OP means by "third party cash converters")
It's not swamping the results, most are private sellers from what I can tell. It would vary location to location, some Cashies make extensive use of Gumtree while others don't bother

Kinda like eBay, it's now flooded with sellers that are on aliexpress (or the likes) as well.
Limited 'real world' sellers clearing old/2nd hand goods…

    Haven't noticed cash converters.
But the ones that bulk post 50 ads to the same category once a month are annoying, pushes the real ads back 3 pages.

in my area it's car dealerships flooding the pages and seem to repost daily making it an effort to find anything else.

  • Yeah gum tree has major issues but I use ebay a lot and if you check for a few things, you can easily spot the scammers. Ebay has worked nicely for me so far.

eBay works nicely when it does, but you'll feel the pain$ when it doesn't.

Given the fees they charge and service provided, eBay is probably the biggest scammer.

I am the opposite. On FB, can't sort by new first and if there are many ads, you have to trawl thorough it all to check them all. No thanks. Just imagine how many ads Sydney has. If you look for a particular item, it shows that, as well as things that have nothing to do with it. If you look at brand name stuff, you will find many of that brand, but than you go to that brand category and suddenly there's a lot less. Then missing categories, the list goes on. Gumtree is not good, but miles better than FB.

As for Cash Converters, they are on FB too. Gumtree, they usually post new ads once a week.

    • What do you mean can't sort by newest first? Just search something, press 'filters', then swipe through the 'sort by' options til you see "Date listed: Newest first". Or do you mean something else?
