Bargain 2nd TV for Movies

I have a nice tv in the living room. I have a soniq 55" in the bedroom. The soniq is crap for movies. Anything dark shows as solid black. So in most movies, in most night scenes, in most action movies, the screen is mostly a blob of black and you can't tell what's there. Horror movies aren't scary because it's just pure black. I think it was like $400 so well.

I wonder if there is anything I can get under $1k at 55" that has a reasonable panel? No features needed, no smarts, I have a android tv box. FHD is enough too. I just want to be able to watch things other than news or cartoons. Happy to wait for EOY sales.

Almost all TVs are 'smart,' because it costs manufacturers very little to add this functionality. It's also going to be 4K; you won't find FHD outside the bargain basement now. If your budget is $1000, wait for a sale on a 65" TCL or Hisense.

    • I see. Is Hitachi any good? They have a Android QLED TV under 1k.
Sony X7000G is close too. I didn't know there were so many qled, I thought they were premium or something.
I'll wait til I can go in store to see what that means for darkness.

Have U checked the settings profile? My Samsung has profiles like movie, natural, dynamic that can be adjusted. I think it's a matter of adjusting the contrast n brightness.

    • I have. The led panel is just crap and cannot show any detail probably in the bottom 20% of brightness. Changing contrast n brightness gives you solid blocks of grey at best.

I have a soniq in the bedroom too. I tried the Apple TV automatic colour setting and it failed on my tv :(

following a YouTube setup video I can get some colours right but canโ€™t get it all. (Red in particular)

    I vote hisense too

    • yeah. it's cheap for a reason. it's OK for cartoons, but anything "interesting" you just can't see anything. Even avenger movies, u can't tell what's giong on

Borrow a chromecast or google tv and try that before getting a new tv, it might be just crap at processing the signal and the panel may be good enough using another device.

I have a TCL and it works great.
The Android TV works well too, but a little bit slow…

    • I'm using a tv box, so playing movies from my nas.
I think it just has no contrast.
