Amazon Buyer Scam

Hi there,

Just would like to share an Amazon buyer scam recently I experience.

The buyer left a post office address and we shipped to it. The buyer didn’t got to pick it up and file a item not delivered case on Amazon.

Amazon favored the buyer and initiated the refund and deducted the amount from our account. Once the case dicision has been made. The buyer went to the Auspost LPO and picked the item right away.

How to avoid this situation in the future? I have already appealed in the case and waiting for Amazon appeal result.

update on 03/10/2021:

Amazon has reverted its dicision on buyer's favor and credited back to my account. Not sure if they will charge buyer back. If not, still the buyer is lucky to get the item for free. Still quite unfair.

    How much?

    • +6

No matter how much the item cost, it is a scam. We should not igore it if it is only a few dollars, right?

If you do two posts with one you get scammed for $5 and the other is $1000 you will see two different responses. Anyway, assume you do contact buyer, buyer not response, I would contact the post office directly, locate the parcel and informed them that buyer has disputed and get item back and you wanted item return to sender. You can contact post office national, but the fastest way is to contact the lpo.

Thanks for your response. If price matters, I would say $10,000. :)

Once I received the case, I called the destination LPO directly, but no one answered. When I saw the buyer collected the item, I also called the buyer, and obviously, he didn't pick up either.

From the buyer filed the case and Amazon decided the case, it is only a few hours, I think, as I even didn't receive any notification when the case was open. I only received the email when Amazon decied the case and initiated the refund. It is in a such short time, that I can't get my item back.

The buyer collected the item in an hour after Amazon made the case decision.

Did you ship via Auspost or via Amazon's logistics service? I wouldn't have thought the Amazon option would deliver to a post office.

    • Yes, I always ship via Auspost. The tracking shows awaiting collection since 28th SEP. As I said, the buyer left the post office as the delivery address on purpose, so that the tracking won't show "delivered" to his home. then he filed the claim and won the case this afternoon. Then he went to post office and picked up the item right away!

If the tracking says awaiting collection at delivery point, wouldn't that be done on your end already? And if they picked it up after, cant Amazon just recharge them (unless they closed the account already)

    • The tracking is showing "awaiting colleciton". the buyer left an ATTN so that the post officer would know it is not a item delivered to post office directly. Or it could be a small town that the post officer knows the buyer's name.

Can't you set to no deliveries except residential addresses.

    • When you sell on Amazon, I don't think you can restrict to the delivery address.

      • +1

Actually a number of sellers mandate I put residental address instead of po boxes or parcel collect.

I'm not saying that a post office address can be flagged

        • They probably suffered from the same scam and learned the lesson. but obviously, it could be avoided, as long as Amazon reviewed the case carefully and they are able to find the item status is actually awaiting collection, rather than "NOT DELIVERED". I guess they use some algorithm to judge the item not received case.

I had the same scam played on me by an EBay buyer.

They opened a case with eBay 'INR' even though the item was sitting at the Post Office they had nominated as the delivery address. Of course, as expected eBay took the buyer's side and refunded them.

The scammer wasn't smart or fast enough though. I immediately got my local PO to contact the delivery PO as soon as the buyer opened 'INR' and request they return the package, explaining that it was a scam purchase.

The buyer's PO returned the item to my PO so all I was out of pocket was the postage cost to send the package.

I had the last laugh as I later resold the item at almost twice the original price and I stopped shipping to Post Office addresses.

    • Nice one, I tried to call the destination LPO, but no one answered. Amazon is also quite fast to make the decision, after a few hours the buyer filed the case. I have no chance to get the item back in a such short time.

What is a post office address? Like a PO Box?

    • +1

No it is not a PO box, it is just a normal address, but the address is actually a post office. We found that the fact after the case we realised that the buyer did this on purpose.

I see, thats sneaky. I once sent something to an address and later found out it was a school. Didnt end up being bad, but I had no idea it wasnt a residence.

        • That parcel could have been sent to me. I often use work as my address so I don’t have to go to the post office to pick up a parcel that was attempted to be delivered. I can only get there on Saturday mornings. Also means that a parcel is not left unattended outside the house.

Damn i just sold on ebay and yes post office address in QLD. Ohhhhhhh!!!!!! I asked the buyer is that the right address and got replied yes

        • It doesn't mean the every buyer leaves the post office address is the scam. but probably you need to watch out.

          • @bullying520: I may send msg to ebay about possible scam and have a record of the conversation so i hope ebay will see that i am genuine seller of scamming indeed happening later. Just sent the item 2 days ago

        • Was it rural or city? It’s pretty common for rural people to get items delivered to a post office instead of a roadside mail box. One property I was on the mailbox was nearly 20km from the house and you only checked it once a week in the dry season and in the wet season might only check it every 3 or so weeks if you were getting heavy rains.

anyway i left note on ebay chat about possible scam.

    • You can rent a Post Office Box and have all mail address to a street address go to the PO Box (post office sorters and delivery staff know the addresses with PO Boxes and direct those deliveries to it) and parcels that don't fit in it get held for pick up at the Post Office.

Hey OP, sorry to hear you were scammed.

Was the Post Office somewhere near Hervey Bay? If so, I reckon I know who has scammed you.

    • Thanks for your kindess. It is in PUCKAPUNYAL.

      • +5

        More concerning considering it's a restricted-access town:

        What is puckapunyal used for?
Puckapunyal is a small restricted-access town inhabited mainly by about 280 families of the Australian Defence Force community, with an associated area of about 400 km2 of bushland and former pasture used for field training exercises.

You should discuss with Amazon, maybe they can also mark the buyer for reference next time

    • Thanks for the reply. I don't think Amazon will do anything to the buyer anyway.

      • +1

Maybe next time they will ban the buyer, maybe they have system like that

  • +5

Puckapunyal is an army base. Shouldn’t be too hard to find out who picked up. It’s restricted access

100% Amazon will not do anything to the buyer not even a contact.

      • well, but he can register a new account.
