Best PayPal Method to Pay Someone Overseas

Im used to getting invoices sent by businesses or retailers i buy from often who incorporate the fees into invoices to be paid.
This is me buying items for myself.

A guy i know who I have been from for few years who has helped me get items i cant get sent direct here.
Its been ages since i did this due to covid and shipping issues etc and im sure paypal has got more greedy or maybe it's same i just forgot as been so long.

Im only using paypal as guy im sure will want it this way.
I have a fee free citi bank card which does not charge fees using for overseas purchases online and probably if overseas but not tried that yet.

Paypal always gets its cut and im sure as time has passed has changed its ways ie started new fees or any work around they might have changed.

I know you can use goods payment and personal im taking personal is just another name for friends with no back up from paypal if things went wrong.

Im also sure when i did this a few years back what paypal said person would get they never did it was wrong amount

When you go on to paypal and use personal and enter amount you want to send it says what person gets but im postive it was never the case? Is fees take off what paypal say person gets meaning they never got the right amount?

You get various ways to pay by paypal.

Pay through your bank which forces you to use paypal exchange rate and normally is high.
You can pay with your card but use paypal exchange again high.
Both these are higher ways. By the way i think doing through bank is 5.99 fee for using bank method.

When i use my fee free card with citi bankon paypal im pretty sure there was no fees to use such card or there was a way to by pass it.
But i see its asking like 11.99 to use my card , using this method and using the card issuer to use its exchange rate rather than paypal works out best.

But im pretty sure the 11.99 fee is new i just cant remember or if i by passed this before or it was stopped.

The difference in using paypal with my card even with the fee they I think now charge is way more than letting paypal use there exchange. As card uses there one.

I want the guy to get right amount obviously first time and im sure we used to this site to figure out what to send.
But even this i have forgotten how to use, its a germany paypal thing that works out what you need to send etc and it's been right in past.
Its not for sending but to work out how much you needed to send.
Will need to view i in google so translates page to English.

I just want to make sure he gets the right amount without having to send more and adding to costs, to save best possible way by doing through paypal.
Yes it be ideal to use another method but im sureci asked this in past and paypal is preferred.

I dont have a trust issue as guy has sent me several items over they years and my past two items this year he paid for shipping himself which was not cheap,.
he said to just wait and pay all at once on final item which im looking to get sent.

    tl;dr

    • Two ways to pay someone overseas; PayPal and if the recipient can discount you on the PayPal fees that is around 3.7% - you can use Wise instead that will cost you around 0.5%.

you can pay on paypal with the "send money to family and friends" option, which incurs no transaction charge BUT you also have no recourse if this guy scams you (it doesn't sound like he will but it's always a possibility). i think it gives you the option to pay in the receivers currency, but i'm not entirely sure.

if any money you sent him has incurred fees in the past, it's because it wasn't sent as F&F. only F&F is free from transaction fees.

  • I see no option to send money to family and friends, I enter the guys name who I have paid before and up comes two payments side by side.
I set to euro left side enter euro amount and do same for right side then becomes one in euro.
It goes to next screen and options are direct from bank accounts at 5.99 fee or card at 11.81 fee yes you would think using direct from bank would be best options but it’s not.

Yes if paying by card and fee of 11.81 which I’m sure is new not there before or maybe was as been ages since I did it.
You pay the amount your sending and the PayPal fee of the $11.probably for using your card but this allows you to use the card exchange rate.
My Citi bank card is fee free or used to be but believe it still is and this cuts out using PayPal exchange which means using the bank method works out much more even using your card but with PayPal exchange is higher.
I just can’t remember if this is new using your card to probably was there before.

But how do I know guy gets right amount if it’s sending as a friend and I enter in euro does he get that? If I was to pay as good does that not add extra in fees.
I’m happy to pay as friend as said but need to be right amount and just unsure why we used to use the calculator thing in past as I’m sure PayPal does not sent what it says.

Was hoping someone knew a bit on paying overseas side of it

But are you saying f&f which I don’t see and it’s called personal now or when I go further through the steps says friend that whatever is sent through that method is full amount it’s only when you pay for goods that a fee is taken from the sellers amount unless you pay extra to cover this?

So I can’t change the amount I end up paying or see.
but will pick the best and lowest for me which would be by card, with it’s fee and use the cards exchange rate rather than PayPal exchange.

Im just hoping that as friend he gets the money it says I send and not less fees his end by reviving this from overseas.

    • If the person is a trusted person and you do this regularly - do it with Wise. In calculator you can specify how much exactly he will get then Wise will tell you how much to transfer via internet banking.

      • I only do the occasional payment 3 or 4 a year maybe,
i cant see the guy giving me his details to send money.
I use wise also but its akward for me as my wise account is set up from another country to move money to here so would not work.

But maybe i should try and set one up from this side which would be handy to have as well.

But my question is and can't find it on google. If i send a payment to someone overseas ie germany and send in euro from my card and as friend, do they get the right amount?
Or does paypal give them less with some sort of fee taken off along the way and guy does not get his full amount required.

        • If you insist on paying someone with PayPal - standard paypal international transfer - the recipient will receive 3.7%+30c less. Thus to be save, just pay 4% more. For example if you need to pay someone 100 euro exactly - pay the person 104 euro instead.

If you can do payment to friends and family with Paypal - there is no fee - thus you pay 100 euro.

          • @foxmulder: Ok but by going with a german paypal calculator i enter personal which is friends and it said even as friend there be 3.99 euro fee taken his end.
I have only used this calculator to work out when paying as goods and it's been bang on.

So I'm assuming sending as friend and it saying 3.99 eiro to pay more I think it was cross border fee, then it can't be fee free.

I gave the guy extra for his troubles etc and if he gets even more all good.
But be great if he started using wise or something as pp are just rip-off paying overseas.
It's crazy in the difference pp can charge you if you jiggle around with using pp exchange rates to using bank or card exchange rate etc.

But will never win with paypal after all these years and plenty competition they still do ok these days.

            • @bwatt72: The thing about Wise, your friend doesn't have to open a Wise account - He or she just have to have a standard bank account to receive money.

You need a Wise account - then on transfer - you can either leave the bank details empty (thus your friend is one that need to enter the details) - but this one will create pending status until that friend enter in him or herself

Alternatively, you can enter in their bank details in transfer thus the money goes straight into their bank account.

              • @foxmulder: With this would there bank charge to receive it? I take all countries be same.
I have accounts overseas and here and i know when i send here with wise only thing i pay is wise fee when sending.

But im sure i can only do one way from overseas to here.
As was set up that way and before wise where even here.
I need to set up one here as be very handy indeed.

                • @bwatt72: In case you don't know - you pay Wise, then Wise will do domestic transfer within that country to bank account you nominate. In most cases I believe receiving money is free. Wise makes their money when someone converts money - Thus when you transfer AUD to Euro - that's when there is fees. Transfers between same currency is free.
