Has Anyone Got Windows 11 to Install on a VM?

So I wanted to have a look at W11.

Fired up VM Workstation16 and gave the VM 70gb of SSD space, 8GB ram

When W11 tries to install I get a 'your system does not meet the minimum requirements' error?

Am running a 5600X with 32GB ram GTX970. W10

I'm guessing it's an issue with the VM workstation but run out luck (and time) trying to figure it out. If anyone had had some success with this endeavour are you able to link me up to the answer. I also have Virtualbox installed if that's any use?

Thanks

    Does it have TPM 2.0?

  • 5600x has fTPM which you can enable in the bios. I have no hands on experience but I think you need a vTPM in Vmware to interface with the fTPM.

    • Virtual TPMs are fully independent of the host's TPM (or lack thereof). No need to do anything on the host, just need to set it up in the VM software (if supported).

In VMware Workstation 16, you need to first encrypt the VM (Options => Access Control => Encrypt) and then add a TPM device in the Hardware tab.

Unfortunately the requirement for encryption is a result of decisions made when that feature was first implemented years ago. Apparently they're looking at removing that requirement in future versions.

VirtualBox currently does not support virtual TPMs. They may add this in the future.

Hyper-V generation 2 VMs support virtual TPMs.

Note that virtual TPM support has nothing to do with whether the host has access to a TPM (fTPM or not). Virtual TPMs are fully emulated; they must be in order for the VM to remain portable.

    • You actually sound like you know what you are talking about.

Very refreshing to see on ozbargain.

  • I've installed Windows 11 on an Intel 3rd-gen Core processor successfully, but it requires three registry keys to be created at install in order to bypass the eligibility checks.

Try the instructions at this location https://www.ghacks.net/2021/07/06/try-this-fix-if-you-get-th…

  • Have it running fine through Hyper-V.

Guide here for installing Hyper-V and setting up Windows 11.

  • Thanks all, will try those suggestions over the next day or so.

  • Yes on VirtualBox 6.1.26 using the ISO listed below from about 2 weeks ago that I downloaded from MS, BUT BUT BUT I cannot perform an update as the update fails due to no TPM and no UEFI bios….

If you read some VM host apps apparently work and other like the current VB do not. Oracle are working on it, but even the latest VB VirtualBox-6.1.27-147118-Win.exe does NOT work and does not include TPM support.

BTW: In your bios you you need to enable the fTMP as the AMD Ryzen series 5 has fTPM built in.
