Weeding and other tips for Garden

Hi ,

We moved to our first house and I am total noob in gardening and outdoor stuff.
First question is about the grass at the front of the house. Although the lawn is not so big (https://ibb.co/FBnSWh5) I am not sure how to de-weed it or should I just Mow it . I tried to remove the weeds manually but not sure its helping much.(https://ibb.co/db55Msq) (https://ibb.co/VvwCLmt)
what sort of weed treatment should I do for these? and how do I make this patch of grass tidy.

Another part, The front beds (https://ibb.co/V3Hbv70) (https://ibb.co/QPh7G25) , would manual weed removal be helpful?(https://ibb.co/pQN6PL5) (https://ibb.co/Xt1B4cH) and Need ideas about flowers etc which I should grow on this.
Note that I am in Perth.

Final Part,
There are more beds at the side & back of the house , which have some trees, any advice what I could grow on those beds.(https://ibb.co/g694PKM)
And how do I keep on clearing the leaves which fall on it.

Thanks .

You can buy "feed and weed" from bunnings or nursery, and hose them over the lawn to control some weeds. You will need to find out what type of lawn you have, so you can buy the correct product. Otherwise, you may end up killing your lawn. If unsure, try taking some samples from the corner to local nursery and ask. But you will still need to pull some out if you want to completely get rid of them. Otherwise, just mow them.

For the second part, if you do not want to maintain them, i would plant low growing hedges. When hedges are mature, they will need low maintenance and block the sun, so less weed. If you want to grow something, weedmat with some mulches may help, but you will still need to hand pick weeds.

I have small mandarin and lime tree on my backyard. They are only 1.5m to 2m high and really easy to grow with great yield. So you can consider those on the third area if those areas gets some sun?

    • feed & weed products are evil because you are unnecessarily using weed killer all the time

I would love to learn if there is a better way! Any suggestions?

    Garden beds - hand weed.
The 'lawn, I would probably mow it and regularly water it to encourage growth. Then use some weed and feed on it to get rid of broadleaf weeds, and some multiweed to get rid of some of the others.
If you encourage grass, and discourage weeds, eventually it will come good.

I'm in the camp that if kids aren't going to be playing on it and you don't care about how it looks, just mow it. It's only a "weed" because we think grass and only grass should be growing there. I dgaf what grows in some places.

Perfect lawn is an endeavour reserved for a select few.

Watch Gardening Australia each week on TV and on the Internet.

  • damn, was it the mango tree on the other side of the fence?

    • Yup. It sure is.

on a serious note, the bed should be easy work, just spend a morning and it should be good. The main lawn, just mow it flat and they'll be alright. If you're pedantic, regular mowing and use those weed and feed will help out, but you'll still occasionally see broadleaves manage to invade so always on the look out for them.

Pull out weeds from the root. Pain staking but the best way. If you just pull the leaves out and leave the stems, they’ll grow back.

Usually best to do after rain, as soil will be soft

Garden bed - manual weed but then you can lay down thick layer* of news paper and add mulch on top to discourage further weeds (if you're feeling lazy, u can even just lay down the newspaper and mulch without the manual weed)

    *thick layer = 3 to 4 sheets

    • Wont the news paper get destroyed due to reticulation/ Rain?

If its thick enough, it won't. But the newspaper will eventually breakdown, and in doing so will feed your soil while smothering the weeds. (you can google this)

Alternate, is plant some ground cover. Over time the ground cover will take over and suffocate any weeds and look good in the process. But this process takes time.

  • Your 3rd photo appears to be a grass runner. Probably buffalo type.

    • no, that's not buffalo, buffalo doesn't run that quick and the leave are thicker. The other grass in the same photo is nutsedge, which is winter grass and very hard to kill because they have bulb underground, you can use methyl sulforon to kill it but it'll take a long time.
