I Want to Play MS Flight Sim. What Platform Should I Go for? Xbox or PC?

Ok so I don't have an xbox or a high end graphics card. I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a GT710.

I want to play MSFS (preferribly in VR). What's the most cost effective way to do that?

I've read that the Series S plus gamepass is the way to go, but can you do VR with that?

No VR on Series S or X, plus it's limited to 16:9 ratio. PC will allow higher ratio if your monitor allows it.

That being said, in non-VR play, Series S will probably look better than your GT710 - that GPU won't be able to handle VR, it might not even be able to handle the game.

MSFS is also available for Gamepass on PC, it's not limited to Xbox Gamepass. Your cheapest way at testing your setup would be to pay for one month of Gamepass PC (~$15) and install the game.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother. I looked into it, there's huge guides on how to tweak a 3080 and a high end CPU just to get 30fps in VR. As cool as it would be, it doesn't seem worth the $2-3k investment.

You're at the limited end of the CPU scale at the moment for VR so that would likely be an upgrade too, maybe a secondhand 3800x. On the GPU front you could look for a secondhand 2080ti. I see them pop up on gumtree for around $1k from time to time but looks to perform better than a 3070 in MSFS. That might get you decentish VR for under $1,500.

Most cost effective is Xbox by some margin.

But you might want to look at how much GPU you can get for 750 bucks (Xbox price). MSFS is a really demanding game and it will look better on Xbox for the money I believe.

For $22 you can avail jetstars promo

  • Non-Gamer here, but have a new Dell PC with RTX 3070. Flight sim seems a game I may be able to play and enjoy. Can it be played on PC with mouse or is game controller required ?

    • Can be played with mouse and keyboard, but with most of these games (that have other input devices), your experience will be different.

If you want to experience flying in VR, there are many other games that are less demanding (hardeware) or more optimised to accommodate VR.

Just depends if you want combat or civilian, or space etc.

Definitely not going to run Flight Sim on a GT710 let alone VR.
You'll need a powerful GPU to get something decent and at this point you'll be shelling out $1000 or more for that alone.
VR probably need to invest in a top end GPU then get the VR set. Might need to upgrade CPU too.

Xbox Series X would give you the best bang for buck solution (assuming you can get one at RRP $750) though VR won't be an option
Series S is easy to find stock and probably the cheapest way to play the game since GPU prices are still crazy expensive even for mid-range cards

got the 3070 and still struggles.

  • If you're internet connection is up to snuff, maybe Xbox Cloud Streaming in future.
