Economical Shipping to West Coast?

Hey all,

Looking for any experience for economical freight from Qld to WA in particular. We currently use a handful of shipping methods:

Gold Coast to Bundaberg (small) - Courier
QLD & NSW (big and bulky) - Followmont
Other locations (Under 25kgs) - Sendle
All locations (Under 5kgs) - Prepaid Aust Post Express Bag
All locations (Big & Bulky) - Toll

Currently for WA, Sendle go to some locations but not all. Toll is soooo expensive.

I just had to send a carton weighing 17kgs (30x30x30) and toll is ~$120. I ended up sending in 4x express bags costing $70.

Any ideas please?

  • Have you tried Interparcel or e-go? Those are the main two way to go about it if you aren't a business that moves enough product to warrant approaching a carrier directly.

    • Interparcel, like transdirect is horrible:

      • It really depends on where you are located and the destination postcode. When I search gold coast to perth on interparcel I get $88 with TNT - e-go is about $56 from memory (I searched it a few hours ago).

If you're moving a large quantity of stock i'd suggest reaching out to a large freight carrier. In my work, we are a $200k-300k account for a freight company. A 17kg parcel from Melbourne to Perth would cost me about $22 - and our rates are crap because they are more focused on cheap full pallet rates.

        • Yep. In this scenario, I'm going to 6450, Esperance. We are located in 4655, so regional also. Perth I can do sendle no worries.

We're not a retailer. We're a truck body builder so more coming in than going out, but often need to send freight of all sizes. Pallets we have just done with toll to WA and passed on the cost, but in this scenario, it was only $200 worth of accessories and $120 postage lol

East coast is fine as followmont cover QLD & NSW which is 90% of what we do and they can onload to VIC.

          • @dmbminaret: Ooft yeah it'd be the other end. We ship things to Hervey Bay and it isnt too bad, but I have seen our rates to Esperance and they are terrible.

Auspost is probably the best way to go. Signing up to MyPost Business may help to move you into a better shipping bracket so that you get better discounts - you dont have to ship too much to get some kind of a discount (8 parcels over an 8 week period to move into Band 1) https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documeā€¦

I can't see the per kg rate for over 5kgs.

              • @dmbminaret: Ive just looked it up on my account (Band 3) - its $97.20 as a standard cost, discount is $12.15 bringing it to $85.05. If you have a good deal with startrack id be doing that.

  • Actually star track look the best. I just found an old quote and it would cost $65 for my 17kg parcel to WA postcode. Only a tiny bit cheaper than express bags but easier to pack.

  • Write address as return to sender
