Subaru Car Prices in Melbourne - Anyone Associated with Subaru Melbourne?

Hello all, has anyone purchased Subaru's from Subaru Melbourne dealerships under the new Price pledge program? I was enquiring about a new car and seems like they only offer a $800-$1000 discounts and also don't even offer floor mats. Anyone in the Ozbargain community that works at Subaru and can get me a good deal?

Thanks

You should feel lucky to get 800 off anything at the moment.

    Pass the popcorn…

Don't bother. All Melbourne Subaru dealerships operate like a cartel being owned by the same parent company. Try a country dealership if you expect to see some movement in pricing.

    • Traralgon Subaru is not part of the Subaru Melbourne group and you can try your luck there to get a better discount

      • Also Lilydale

    • country dealerships not wanting business from Melbourne customers. I spoke to someone at Leongatha and he recommended go to local dealership. Lilydale is selling at the RRP but said they can drop it to the same as Subaru Melbourne.

      • Well take the discount offered, or buy a Mitsubishi

    Déjà vu.

  • 1k discount= Amazing at this period.
What model were you enquiring if you don't mind?

Don't worry, all car manufacturers in the next few years will move to an "order online, pickup in store" type fixed price model. We all laugh about it now with Honda doing it, but Hyundai just announced that the new Ionic 5 is website only and no discounts. I estimate that in 2 or so years from now, almost every manufacturer will be fixed price car sales and dealerships will just be click and collect points and warranty/servicing centres.

Also, you can save that $800~$1,000 off and put it towards your own mats and weather shields.

  • I don't mind the price as long as it is fair to everyone. In the past, I have had the experience that I have got a better pricing than my mates for the same spec car and this is because each dealership and sales person had the room to move with their margins. I suppose we all have had this experience with all the electronics at HN's or TGG's too. I guess this is because there's no price control and every franchise can sell it at their will (RRP vs MRP).

Offer them 15% off, and walk if they won't do the deal. Have to play hard ball.

Continue until you've tried every dealer in the state. Then try a different state.

Warning: You may end up needing to try a different country

  • Went to Subaru docklands a few months back to see what sort of gap there would be for trading up to an STI - they wouldn't go below RRP for the new vehicle

    • I'm not sure about the current state but that was also my experience prior to COVID. It depends on who you ask but there are some clowns there who aren't really sales and then some who are and after a conversation they'll drop the price.

  • The ole fake price match.

You'd have to wonder if showing a fabricated or modified quote from another dealership would be considered outright fraud — as the competing dealership is not forced to sell the vehicle / beat the price if it's not good business sense.

Hmm. Ethics vs. the law on this one.

    • They'll just go out the back and make a phone call to verify you're lying. It's really not going to work well.

      • They would never call another dealer to verify a price. That I can assure you. As if they would.

    • Except they don't have to match it.

While not having a written quote, countless customers have come in saying "dealership down the road offered X, can you beat that?". Countless times salespeople have responded with "no, sorry, just go back to them and buy for that price". The best thing is that look in their eyes of "oh shit, I've quoted too low, now I have nowhere to go". You'll get responses of "oh but I didn't like their service", or "what could you do?".

It's almost like customers don't realise we do this every day…

      • Exactly my point. They don’t have to match it, thus my hypothetical “fraud” vs simple deal getting question in the original post.

When everything moves fixed price I’m not even sure what the role of salespeople will be in the new car market.

It’s going to turn into a glorified apple store experience.

        • It’s going to turn into a glorified apple store experience.

          Pretty much!
