Speed Limits along a Number of Roads in The Sydney Hills District Are Changing

"Speed limits along a number of roads in the Sydney Hills District are changing and will now have different rules at certain times of the day."

School zone time on the signs are mostly small fonts and hard to be seen when driving, with a standard time throughout NSW of 8am-9.30am and from 2.30pm-4pm, the small fonts are not a problem because the times are standard.

With this new time non standard time, more people will be booked because one has to remember which street, which school zone while driving and at the same time try reading the small fonts on the signs.

What do you think?

The changes will come into effect in the next two weeks, and will not change until the new signs are installed.

    I'm sure with enough signage it'll be a non-issue

Agreed. You don't need to "remember" anything as OP suggests. Simply follow the signage rules as you should be as a driver.

Absolutely makes sense in school zones during school times. No complaints.

Now about the too low motorway speed restrictions… Different story there.

hard to be seen when driving

Perhaps time to see an optometrist?

    • shoulda gone to specsavers

    • I have no problem reading the signs. The time fonts are smaller relative to the 40 in the circle, which makes is harder to read while driving normal speed with Sydney's traffic.

People easily get caught with the change of the time, that's all.

  • So slow..

NSW that is, it’s been like this for years in vic

    • it’s been like this for years in vic

I think the OP is complaining that the school zones times outside this particular school are non-standard school zone times and how could anyone be expected to obey them

      • I am not complaining, I am just giving heads-up for people getting caught with a non standard time school zone.

@kerfuffle: Is Sydney not part of Oz?

Please show me Ozbargain guideline that one cannot post things related to Sydney only and I am more than happy to remove this post.

            • @jpl: voted out due to covid spreading
              .

      • Oh you’re spot on, looks like I need an optometrist like you suggested!

Hopefully they're lit as I admit, I never look at the times on the sign because I know what they are. Having one school zone in the whole state with different times seems ridiculous. Either change them all or keep them all the same IMO.

    • It's not just one school. There's one in Merrylands/Guildford with different times, however unlike the yellow school zone signs, these ones are orange

      • Is that what the orange means? I've seen some of those but never noticed they were different times because as I said, I don't look at the times as I expect them to be all the same.

        • That's my interpretation of it. Of course, I could be wrong.

          • @kerfuffle: Theres more of the different time zones outside of Sydney, esp in rural areas, so I think you're on point regarding the different coloured school zone signs.

@kerfuffle: Yep, looked it up. Form https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/schools/…
"Most school zones operate from 8 to 9.30am and from 2.30 to 4pm. However, there are a small number of non-standard school zone times in NSW, which are identified by red/orange school zone signs showing the times when school zone flashing lights operate."

Pay more attention to the environment on road, and reprogram your autopilot.

When motorists stop kicking own goals and getting fines the government will just widen the goal posts to make it easier to kick those own goals.

Next step will be to reduce the speed limits in school zones from 40 down to 20 to further frustrate drivers.

Box Hill.. thats hardly what I was thinking about when the title said "Hills District"

As for the times, its a bit weird to see extended school zones. Where there are different school zone times, they're usually shifted forward or back half an hour from 7:30 to 9am, or 8:30 to 10, rather than extended. The signs are usually also orange/red, instead of the usual yellow.

    • Geez you're braver than me to call them out…

I live in the Hills… and I was like Box Hill? Isnt that in VIC?

        • There's a Box Hill 5km from Rouse Hill. True story.

  • Hopefully there's a grace period… (wishful thinking).

There really needs to be lights on every school zone sign or at least in frame where the cameras are.

I really don't want to turn Australia into America with their stop signs on buses.

    • Unfortunately no excuse whether the lights flash or not. Lots of people tried to appeal but unsuccessful.

You're going to love to 30km zones when you travel to Liverpool..

I’ve always thought school zones in residential areas should be 40km/h 24/7 but shouldn’t exist at all on major highways.
It is confusing, the confusion would help the revenue more than the safety aspect. Surely you could still get run over noon. What if you stayed at after school care to 5pm?
How is everyone meant to know when the school holidays are?

It’s time to make school zones all day, not just morning and arvo. Local high school finishes early on mondays so all the kids are out and gone before the school zone kicks in. Then there’s often other things going on at schools meaning more people are around during the middle of the day.

Call me ignorant, but I think those times are always difficult. I have no idea what the time is… half the time. I like the flashing lights for school zones! I don't read those little numbers either, hard enough to look at a speedo continuously ensuring I'm not speeding with the speed needle way low on the bottom end where I can't exactly read speed instantly either…. I just try drive slowly all the time and slow down for schoolzones a bit more, it is bloody stupid how you get fined for a few kms over the limit IMHO. Took decades for me to slow down, and I don't think it's age, it's just the odd fine I'm not willing to pay anymore. And I am sure I'll still get booked for accidental speeding in the future.
