I am looking to buy and electric bike at around the $1,000 mark, or less ideally.
I will only be using it for reasonably short commutes, but would like the option to be able to take it on longer rides (15kms) at times.

My friends experience with a valk electric bike was not good. The motor kept randomly dropping out due to a poorly designed battery connection. They had to return the bike.
I suspect most sub-$1000 bikes would be similar, you get what you pay for…
Agreed, plus it would be heavy as….
It's just the button. 5 minute fix by opening it up and then tightening the screw that holds it. The rest is solid.
IMHO i wouldn't by a sub-$1000 electric bike.
The motor, battery and throttle control cost for that alone would be at least $400, this leaves ~$250-$300 for the bike (which would need decent brakes) and then you have the retailer markup of $300.
Would you buy a $300 bike?
I would stick to gumtree or marketplace for second-hand ones.
And that bike looks to be worth every bit of $200 in parts.
I've been using a $700 E-bike for 12 months now. Cruising at 25+km/h with some luggage at the back no issues. Not sure why you'd need to spend anymore just to ride around town within 10kms.

If you're not on lockdown, I would seriously consider going in-store n giving a variety of a bikes a feel before buying. Some places let you go for a test ride.
I was considering an electric bike for commuting but ultimately decided on an electric scooter for portability, weight and parking. Also check on your States laws in regards to Electric scooters. No need to secure it, just fold it and bring it with me to my office. Got a Segway. Great decision.
