GPU Advice Wanted on 2 Builds Please!

Hi all,

I have 2 builds and want some advice on whether I should jump on today's eBay sale and grab some GPUs.

Both builds were completed last month with 5600x, 16gb 3600 ram, but GPUs were from the previous builds.

One build has a GTX 970, the other a 2060 Super (purchased early December 2019).

The 970 needs replacing obviously, and it needs to be replaced with an Asus GPU it's an 'RGB' build and aesthetics are important to the owner and all RGB is sorted through Asus software at the moment. The choices are the ROG Strix ROG Strix 3060 Ti or 6700 XT. The 6700 XT is slightly cheaper at $1275 vs $1349 after discounts. Currently playing on a 1080p display with no plans for 1440 or high refresh rates. Currently not playing anything that will max out the new GPU regardless (Skyrim and a bit of GTA V and possibly RDR 2).

Second build with the 2060 Super is a 50/50 call. Given the current prices, I think I may be able to sell it for around my original purchase price of $650 (anyone interested by the way in the Hills District, Sydney???), meaning I can get 3060 Ti or 6700 XT for a more 'reasonable' price. Currently playing iRacing, F1, GTA V, possibly RDR2 on a 1080p display. May consider a 1080p 144Hz or 1440p 144Hz monitor upgrade if the price is right. My only concern is if I'm getting a good enough increase in FPS for my $600-700 spend (after selling the 2060 Super).

The highest priority is clearly the 970 replacement as there are some minor issues with it, but am tempted to upgrade the 2060 Super as well. As it's near impossible to guess if prices will drop significantly in the coming months, I'm not too keen to continue waiting just in case they continue to climb, and don't want to be stuck with an 'inferior' 3060/6600XT for today's cost of the 3060Ti/6700XT if the 970 suddenly dies in a few months time, for example.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!!!

  • If it were me I would get the 3060 Ti, its around the same performance as the 6700XT but it just has more features that you can have fun with. Ray Tracing and DLSS would put me over the line.

For the second build if it doesnt need to be an Asus card for RGB you should be able to get it Sub 1k during sales.

    • I'm leaning that way too. I'm tempted by the lower initial cost of the 6700XT, but I think/know the 3060Ti will be better long term, especially with DLSS.

Any thoughts about the second build with the 2060 Super? Gut feeling says to keep it, especially with the potential stresses of selling it. The money then can be put towards the PS5 'fund' next year when Gran Turismo 7 comes out.

Edit: Just saw your comment - No need for RGB so happy to wait for sales/just keep it. I have noticed one or two Ti deals for ~$1000 so I think I'll wait and see with the second build.

      Thank you!

      • Its probably worth hanging on to for now, with GPU prices trending downwards you would probably be better waiting. 3060Ti is only about 50% faster than the 2060 for an extra 600 bucks.

        • They're not really trending downwards though- they're wobbling up & down. There were much better specials in June/July, when I first started looking- right as people were celebrating China's mining ban, yet I would save hundreds if I bought an RTX 3070/ti or 6700 XT back then.

  • I would get a 3060 Ti (wait for ~$860 deals) with RTX,DLSS,CUDA (I won't touch any AMD card just because of this) ,NVENC etc. Also exclusive access to the green team :P

p:s: would you like to donate 2060 S to me ;)

Can't believe nobody mentioned a 6600 XT yet… If all you are targeting is 1080p, and not aiming for high refresh rates nor 1440p, one may argue even the 6600 XT is a bit overkill…If you need a card right now, 6600XT is the best (or least bad depending on how you read it) value card at the moment. Although it might not have as much bling as you might have hope…

  • Quick update for those following

Ended up not buying anything because by the time I was finished with work the ROG Strix listing was gone. Have to go with ROG Strix for the aesthetic despite cheaper variants, but the owner of the build has saved up for it so we'll keep waiting for that card.

The 2060 Super card will stay. Not worth the effort of selling etc.

Prior to the 2060 Super, this build also had a GTX 970 (We have 2 in total). As I have no use for one (and possibly both in the near future), should I try sell it for cash on Gumtree/FB?
