Servers Galore Closure

Anyone else get this email? Nathan, are you refunding folks?

"Due to extreme, severe and unforeseen circumstances Servers Galore will cease operating as of 13 September 2021. All VPS and Web services will remain active until 1 October 2021. After this date, our servers will be shut down and data beyond this date will be unrecoverable. Please ensure that all required data is obtained before 1 October 2021.

Unfortunately due to the unique circumstances our Billing, Sales and Technical Support departments will no longer be monitored.

We thank you for supporting a local Australian business and wish you all the best on finding a new host.

Regards,
Servers Galore Team"

  • Yes. Received 7am. Strange. And no mention of refunds. Perhaps they were a deadpooling scheme? Anyway time to prepare for migration.

    • I'll have to look up what deadpooling is. Pretty disappointed. Reckon PayPal will reverse the transaction I only just paid for in August for a 6-month service?

if their billing and sales departments will no longer be monitored, perhaps there will be no one to respond to the paypal dispute, paypal will find in your favour if they receive no response from the other party. this is of course assuming there were no sneaky little T&Cs describing this exact situation and how you wouldn't be getting a refund.

        • PayPal are pretty ruthless to the company I work for in regards to PayPal claims no matter how made up and false the customer's claims were. It would be nice to be on the other side for once when this is legitimate.

        • They all mention deadpooling but none actually say what it is (other than just a scam). No matter how deep I go, it is never explained.

If you know, can you explain?

          • @FiveDarrah: Deadpool sounds like a character from Marvel Universe….

Not sure what deadpooling is in this context, but a quick google search yielded something quite unexpected.

      • Worth a shot, they've refunded me for an annual prepayment in past when Hostdoc cut and ran

  • So….. recomendations? I left OVH for SG and I was really happy for the change, well, up until now. Also PayPal dispute won't work for me as I'm in the 7th month of a year paid upfront and PayPal will only protect up to 6 months :-(

    • I'm looking at the same thing. This link may help https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/348888m3

Looking like Binary Lane. I need no support so provided it's on decent hardware, looks good and prices are good.

        • Nexusbytes in now in Melbourne, too.

          • +2

@bdl: Damn, actually looks pretty good. I migrated everything this morning to Binary Lane and it all went really smoothly so can't complain too much. Not paying too much more that Nexusbytes and I get to pay in AUD which is nice.

            • @jaymzrsa: I do like BL but also good to have competition, I think Nexus is Ryzen too :)

              • +1

@bdl: They do have a Ryzen offering. That is what I was looking into :-)

I've also entirely automated the migration process, only thing left is to automate the DNS updates in CloudFlare so it's a good problem to have. I can very easily switch over now so I might give them both a 3 month trial.

                • @jaymzrsa: Nexusbytes usually has offers around Black Friday so that may be worth testing BL until then, too!

    • What's wrong with OVH?

My issue is mainly that it is a massively abused provider due to their ease and low cost so it got to a point not just single IP's having dodgy history but entire subnets being blocked or carrying baggage. I have a small need for mail and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't win. I think they also over-provision so performance starts off snappy but felt like it got worse and worse as it goes on. Lastly, you are stuck on their older assets. You literally have to create a new VPS to get on the newer hardware when it's released. Some of that is subjective and I guess it's also your use case, but that's why I left.

        • Ah I see. I don't have much experience with their VPS but their dedicated is pretty good.

You might want to check the IP reputation ( I use https://talosintelligence.com/ & https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx ) and ask the support to give you reassigned on new IP / new block if it has bad reputation. Another thing is to ensure you have the reverse DNS created and matched the forward entry plus the usual SPF/DKIM/DMARC.

Most VPS providers sweat their assets to the last mile and the only way out I pretty much requesting new servers.

It's a bit strange. It's a signed e-mail, so that suggests it's probably legit. But it seemed like a good business model - take people's money, provide a VPS, everyone's happy.

Clearly they were pretty generous. I'm looking at other services at the moment and I'm not really finding anything as competitive or even a deal that'd make it work in aggregate on the business side.

Still it seems like a lot of leg-work for a company just to terminate. I'm not too upset because I was month-to-month and my loss is $1.60 - so I can't imagine that would even rank in the top 10 losses I experience this quarter.

So I guess I'm just more sad than anything.

Edited to make the language a little softer

I would just like to clarify a few things. Servers Galore is not a "deadpooling" or any other scam/fraud business. Servers Galore has been a legitimate business. There are some very unfortunate events that have forced the sudden and immediate closure. This has nothing to do with trying to scam people, the circumstances around the closure are very unique, unfortunately. We are unable to constantly monitor the Sales, Technical Support and Billing department due to these reasons.

We are working with what we have and are trying to do our best with it.

Really sorry about this. I know you have put a ton of work into this business and I only ever had good service from you. It's a sad day for us and even worse for you I'm sure.

    • +2

It sounds pretty bad. Even if it was just funding - it still sucks. Costs nothing to be nice: so sending you and everyone there good vibes. Your service helped me to set-up some cool stuff and is much appreciated.

    • +6

I'm sorry to hear that. Are you able to elaborate a bit further on those unfortunate events? Eg. if you can't say anything specific, then at least what kind of events are you dealing with?

Also, will you be able to provide partial refunds for customers who paid upfront for eg. a yearly plan?

      • +1

If you don't hear back, you may be better off pursuing the refund yourself modrzew. Sure chargebacks and PayPal disputes are a mean thing to do to a going concern. But if a company is in the hands of administrator, the owner (who no longer owns the company) legally can't provide you a refund but may be quite happy for you to get your money back (if you can). Plus refunds in these circumstances I feel is really part of the deal being PayPal, MasterCard, Visa or American Express.

We are providing partial refunds for annual orders with more than 3 months of service from 1 October 2021. If you have more than 3 months of service paid for after 1 October 2021, open a support ticket in our Billing department and we will try our best to refund the remaining amount. We cannot guarantee a refund on all orders but are trying our best to reply to all inquiries as promptly as possible.

Just wanted to say I got a refund on my hosting this afternoon - I had just started my second year with him. While I definitely appreciate it , it shows to me at least that there is no foul play (I actually told Nathan in my ticket to keep the payment if he was in genuine hardship as it’s not that big an expense for me).

Nathan is closing his business in the way I always received service - honest and prompt! All the best Nathan

    • the circumstances around the closure are very unique,

….and what are these unique circumstances?

  • Any plans for acquisition by another host?

    • Doubtful and if it was to happen prices would be dramatically changing and probably quickly. From what I've heard Angelo talk about in the past they're probably not coming to save you.

  • What i'm shocked at is there is noone who would be willing to take over the business (Assuming its due to Nathan not able to continue on)

I would have thought that a quick fire sale of assets would have been ideal :/

I hope Nathan is doing ok, he was a machine!!! but all the best for him,

    • me too - very surprised

  • But for others looking at options, i was with OVH before and moved to SG, looking back at OVH they seem to finally have gig links in the Sydney system on ADV servers, might be a reason to switch back??

I think this is one of the major risks with going with a smaller provider, but ATM OVH is on my list to switch back and take up a gig link, that or Servers Australia maybe,

  • Always had good service, great offerings.
Currently looking for another place :(

  • Pulled the trigger an moved everything to Binary Lane. Seems pretty good and I like the backup options.
Not as cheap as Servers Galore, but I guess you pay more for some features.
Unfortunately I would have preferred a Melbourne based server, but what's a few extra ms to Sydney, hey?

    • Binary Lane has Melbourne servers

      • Didn't give me the option to choose Melbourne. Maybe it's only certain types, or they're out?
