Is It Possible to Send GPU as a Gift to Overseas from Australia?

I want to send a GPU(3080/3090) overseas, is it possible to post it via Australia Post or is it not legal?

    Why would it not be?

    Why would it be illegal?

    • There are some countries that some technologies are restricted for export.

Take for instance, Playstations 4 were (don't know if it's currently the case) not able to be sold to Iran and some other unfriendly countries.

A lot of devices that can potentially be used for cryptography have restrictions. I haven't heard of video cards being on any restricted list (it's not something I look up to be frank), but these days some of them have a lot of processing power in them, so it could be possible that they're not allowed to be sent to some countries.

Legal but make sure it's packed very very very very very well and you buy insurance.

It might be subject to import taxes depending on where you send it. If you'd prefer to avoid that, feel free to send it to me instead.

This. Of course it isn't legal, but depending on the destination country the recipient may be in for an expensive gift.

      • *illegal :P of course it isn't ILLEGAL :D

Sent it to Russia. What could possibly go wrong?

Could be Bangladesh as OP sending back home?.

OP may need to sent 2 in the package, so at least one arrives. /s

The mailman will probs steal it and resell.

  • Does GPU stand for something I'm not aware of? Why would it be illegal otherwise?

  • I sincerely hope you have not asked this questions about sending as a "gift" because you want to avoid people being upset about you selling it.

If you sold it will be stolen in a scam for sure.

    "Gift"…

To answer your question - no, it's not illegal.

It's definitely illegal. I know someone who tried to send a 3090 to Indonesia and was charged with money laundering, was extradited there and is currently awaiting sentencing with the prosecution trying to go for the firing squad.

curious why you'd want to send overseas when most would seek to import from o/s. Pricing here is through the roof and you've already paid GST on it and it'll likely be taxed depending on the country you send it to.

    • just gauging the options since even the hiked prices here are cheaper than back home. now need to see how much taxes it would be charged when receiving overseas to see if it is actually cheaper to buy from here and get it shipped.

You'd likely have to deal with import taxes and what not. It being a gift probably would not make it exempt from import tax and other taxes you might have to pay.
Depending on what country you are from, the whole procedures with the customs might make it stupidly expensive or/and annoying to deal with.

So my advice would be to check the procedures with the customs first.
