Effective Mice Poison? Does Australia Have a Mice Plague!

I am in a high rise and normally do not have mice and recently I saw one in my apartment for the first time in many years. I was shocked not only because I am high up but also floor below me are offices.

I tried trap, poison but no luck at all. I googled most effective poison for mice and found lots of news articles about mice plague going on in the last 4-5 months. Did you experience it and we have a mice plague?

Do you have any tips, advice and experience in dealing with mice, most particularly what is the most effective mice poison? Thanks

  • I thought the mouse plague was a beat up by the media (what isn't these days)?

At my workplace, an industrial site they use those black box catchers that mice and rats go into but never escape from.

Have a chat to some rural folk. Not a beat up.

Am regional but rural was hit harder.

        Not a media beatup.

$$$$$$$ of crops and hay were destroyed in farming areas.

Winter helped keep the numbers down but they will be back for sure. Hopefullly the snakes and birds have a field day and help keep the numbers down as the numbers increase.

There was a huge shortage of chemicals, baits and traps but supplies have caught up over the winter.

Sorry, I meant that it was a beat up that the mice had actually made into the cities. They had idiots reporting live from the middle of Sydney etc.

  • Are you seriously asking if Aus has a mouse plague? Country areas got smashed with mice earlier this year. Conditions have been perfect for them, the numbers probably mean this spring they’ll be back

cities don’t have plagues of them, but it is highly likely they are breeding more than normal.

What do you mean tried trapping and poison but no luck? Still see them or didn’t catch anything? They may have moved on if you don’t see them anymore, especially if you aren’t leaving food out and their last meal made them sick.

Keep trapping. Keep cleaning and making sure no foods are available for them. If you saw one, there’s likely a t least one more probably a few.

Poisoning can lead to mice dying in walls and you may get a bit of a smell from decomposition.

I for one welcome our new rodent overlords

    • At least they aren't pretending not to be vermin, like our politicians.

Just put out some poison. The mice eat it, then die a bit later.
You just won't see any again.

  • Rat-sak double strength

    • Thanks 🙏

  • The one that worked for me was the cube packs. They dragged it into their hiding spot, and never came out. Except I had to do a second one.

  • saw that scary news thing a few months ago but nothing since then

  • The "keep your place clean" is a bit of a myth. Yes it helps but that wont solve it as mice need to travel to where the food is, hide, sleep, breed, and your sparkling clean house could be it. Use the mice cubes that they travel through.and die in. Also plug any holes, they hate steel wool. Will chew through anything but that. Plug every hole up, its alarming how little space they need to squeeze through gaps .

Source: lived in a country where mice there were as normal as cockroaches here.

    • Thanks 🙏

  • Sticky traps are highly effective against mice, some people think they're inhumane.

They’re also illegal for amateur use in some states.

    • How to use sticky tape?

  • Most poison needs a second feed despite what is written on the label. If the poison is Warfarin based and they keep coming back for more than a second feed try a brodifacoum based poison or vice a versa. Some become tolerant to a type of poison. Swapping to a different poison is a good idea. Some of the waxed blocks have holes in the middle that allow you to nail then to a piece of wood. It could be a good idea to encourage them to eat the bait rather than stash it somewhere if they cannot carry it away.

Persistence pays off. Uncontrolled rats and mice can cause ,thousands of dollars damage to household wiring. It is worth sticking to it.

Be cautious that poison is not put where birds or pets can get it.
