iPad Air Repair

Hi,

I got an old iPad Air that I want to change the battery and screen at Apple. It's not under Apple Care anymore.

From memory, I read somewhere that apple doesn't really repair old iPads. They instead give you a refurbished iPad as a replacement.

Is this correct? Or was it simply a temporary replacement, they then return your original iPad? Anyone knows the process?

Thank you.

  • I'm not too sure about the process of repairing older iPads, but Apple's support staff is great so I would give them a ring. Passed on my old 2013 MacBook Pro to my brother last year and they were still extremely helpful even though it wasn't under warranty.

    • Thank you. It looks like Apple doesn't repair iPad Air anymore.

  • If it's a local AU stock item under warranty, they replace it with a refurbished item straight away. It's completely identical to brand new.

For out of warranty or international stock items, they tend to send it off for repair depending on the issue.

Your mileage may vary due to many different factors e.g. backlog, stock, issue in question etc.

Consider the proposed cost of the out of warranty repair though. They're generally quite high and sometimes it's far more economical to get it done at a phone repair kiosk or indeed, order parts and DIY relatively easy with a guide from ifixit.com.

    • Thank you. It's AU stock but it looks like Apple doesn't repair iPad Air anymore.

  • It depends on the age of the product. They do certain out-of-warranty screen or battery replacements. You can check on their support site. In the cases of some old products, it might not be worth getting Apple to repair them as the costs are too high.

    • Thank you.

  • Battery costs $165 to replace. Screen they'll likely replace the whole device. Any damaged iPad has the same out-of-warranty service fee regardless of what's wrong with it that is slightly cheaper than a new iPad. They will give you a new/refurbished version of the same model (i.e. if you have an iPad Air 2 they'll charge you $459 to give you another iPad Air 2, not worth it over buying a new iPad).

    • Thank you.

  • Which iPad Air model are you talking about?

If you are referring to an iPad Air (the model released in 2013 and has no Touch ID), Apple no longer provides any out of warranty repairs for it, because it is not listed on this page. In this case, Apple will not help you and you will have to either go to a third-party repair place or DIY it.

If you are talking about an iPad Air 2 and you want the screen to be replaced due to a fault or damage (as well as the battery), it will cost you $459 (+ $19.95 shipping if you are not swapping it in-store), as that is the cost of nearly all out of warranty replacements. Apple has a lower fee for a battery service ($165 + shipping if applicable) if the only problem/defect with your iPad is a faulty battery.

It does not matter if the iPad was Australian stock or international stock, or if it is out of warranty or being replaced under warranty/ACL. Any replacement iPad you will get from Apple direct in Australia will be a refurbished iPad. I asked Apple Store staff a couple of years ago whether they did any repairs for iPads (much like how they can do repairs for Macs and iPhones), and I was told that they don’t repair iPads, because of the copious amounts of adhesive used to hold the entire device together. Your old iPad is sent away, and will either be recycled at recyclers, or be repaired and end up as a refurbished iPad for a different person!

    • I brought in an iPad Air 2 into the Sydney store for a battery replacement ($165 on the Apple website) and was told they don't do repairs on them anymore; it would be $459 to have it replaced with a refurbished one. Took it to a 3rd party store near Town Hall and was quoted $250 and would be a non-genuine battery.

I ended up repairing the iPad Air myself with a $25 battery from Amazon, using a hair dryer and suction cup to free the LCD

      • I would take the above advice as well. I contacted Apple message support for a Apple Watch Series 1 battery replacement after doing a at home diagnosis check online then and had it sent to them for $138.95.

It was diagnosed again at the service centre and they gave me two options, $271.82 for out-of-warranty repair or return my device unrepaired. As the condition it was in looked too worn out as the space grey colour paint chipped everywhere in the earlier models.

In Hindsight I could’ve just went on eBay or Amazon for a cheap under $20 replacement battery kit and did it myself as it’s out of warranty. I had to beg for my initial payment back which is still pending because you could literally buy a brand new Apple Watch S3 online at Apple for $299.

    • Thank you. You are right. It looks like Apple doesn't repair iPad Air anymore. I may have to either repair it elsewhere or just buy a new one it appears.

  • Get someone else to repair it, had my son's Ipad repaired 6 months ago with screen crack and boot issue, cost me about $150 to fix both issues, no issues since

    • Which store did you go to?
