I remember these my company at the time bought one to try out, performance was sub par even back then, low voltage dual cores don't produce a lot of heat but the trade off is performance It struggled with x264 video I suspect it's still faster than some atom CPUs or amd 350 but not by much. These would be 2 years old now so don't expect 6 hours from the battery you will get 3 if your lucky. Lack of warranty, resistive touch screen, used and crappy performance is a real deal killer for me.

    • This is not a phone.
Resistive touch screen is a plus if you want to be able to use a normal stylus for things like handwriting, sketching etc.

      • Just get a capacitive stylus for that…

    • thanks for the reality check. was tempted!

    • Yup the warranty is utterly useless !, but resistive touch on a 12.1" screen is not an issue as this comes from the Gigabyte T1028 era…, the reason you struggled with x264 was due to Vista, the LV CPUs proved to perform 10x better under Windows 7.

    thanks for the info sonicentropy

The lack of decent warranty was already enough to have put me off, without the other factors you point out soiicentropy.

Resistive touch screen you say? Gee I wonder why they might have missed that tiny detail from their description?!

does the wireless G standard matter?
    is it old tech?
    woth the price?

    • no
      yes
      kinda

  • 3 Month warranty for Refurbished

Very tempted. I don't think the touch screen being resistive matters that much, as long as it is responsive. If anything, it makes it more accurate to use with a stylus. Swapping in an SSD would probably help the performance a lot too. So it comes down to the weight of this thing, and I must say 1,7kg for a tablet is just too much for me.

    • This model uses 1.8" hard drives, so swapping the SSD will be a bit more expensive than usual.

  • IMHO, not worth it! from previous deal, you can get i5 laptop under $300 but yeah, this is tablet, but why you want to use this kind a tablet with only wireless a/b/g? its not even real tablet hehehe, once again, IMHO

  • was $2500 on 2008?

This type of tablet PC has a very limited market, but in those limited markets they are golden. For most anything else (such as a general purpose laptop) they are much maligned - especially if you compare them against consumer tablets (iPad, Xoom, etc.) for general casual computing.

If you work in an industry where this sort of tablet functionality is a compelling feature (eg education) then this is a good deal. The only reason I haven't bought one of these already is that I'm hoping to be out of academia and in the private sector in a couple of months…

  • Perfect alternative to Bentan's $199 netbook.

these are really worth it for the price.

    PROTIP if you buy one:

BE REALLY CAREFUL WHILE CLOSING THE LID. THERE IS A NOTCH WHICH IF NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY WILL CRACK THE SCREEN UPON CLOSING THE LID. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS LAPTOP.

I know this because I look after these at our school and surprise surprise, you would never guess how many cracked screens we get. Surprisingly HP honor the warranty since its a design flaw, so be REALLY REALLY carefuly when closing it.

  • I don't believe there's any kind of touch on this model at all. It looks like it's stylus-only with the built-in Wacom system. Good for handwriting and sketching though. On the plus side it means it won't detect your hand on the screen at all.

    • its a resistive so yeah touch WORKS

This is a Tablet PC that runs Windows 7. It's not a "tablet" in the same way the iPad and Android devices are. It's a convertible laptop/Tablet PC from HP's business product line, although now over 3 years old.

Their intended uses are completely different. For example, the 2730p has a full active digitiser with pressure sensitivity, so you can do Photoshop work with a stylus. It is great for sketching and handwriting-based note-taking. It's not a device for you to hold in your hands and watch videos with for 6 hours.

I don't own this, but I do own and love the 2740p (the successor to this model). Just that it almost cost about the same as this deal, but with an extra 0 at the end of the price tag.

Sure the 2730p is outdated, and I'm not sure about the quality of these refurbs. But compared to the original product, this sure is a bargain basement price.

Some reviews from around its original release:

    • Actually this one is running Vista

      OS: Windows Vista installed (COA)

      • yes that is correct, but easily upgradable and speed get really snappy with Win 7 on it !, readin reviews…

  • Does anyone know if it has 3g moudle? I knew it has sim card slot.

THIS IS -NOT- MY IDEA OF "REFURBISHED"

    • "3 Months (excludes battery and cosmetic defects;
    • battery warranty is DOA only - 5 days)

THIS IS LIKE WHAT YOU GET WITH -USED- GEAR

(Compare to ASUS's refurbished Transformers: 1 Year)

Also, I don't see any photos showing the "tablet"
operating while -disconnected- from the "dock"

    I wonder if this is a rotatable-screen laptop…?

A -tablet- is something -very- else, IMO.

Also: It -weighs- almost 2 Kg (Spec: 1.7 Kg)!

what are you talking about ? lol

Refurbished: An item that has been repaired, restored or otherwise problems fixed. Most computer stores that get a pallet of laptops will at least replace dead components (i.e. HDD's, Screens, Keyboards etc…). They may not replace cosmetics (would generally raise the cost significantly etc…).

Used: An item that has been used, and re-sold. No repair, no restoration, no problems fixed. You're generally buying "as-is" (i.e. compare a 'used' laptop from an individual on eBay versus a computer store).

It's not exactly Apple refurbish where they change the chassis as well, but I think it's unfair to negative a deal when you don't feel it is satisfactorally refurbished.

Tablet is not 'something else', these are in the style of the original Tablet PCs. Apple has helped find a new way to deliver Tablet PCs with capacitive touch - slate-like devices to what we have today. The "Tablet PC" won't die for quite a while to come. There's a specific niche market for them. Note the "specific niche market" bit - these aren't going to satisfy those after the functionality of at minimum an Android Tablet.

Not exactly what I'd call consumer friendly, even with Windows 8. Windows 8 wants 1366x768 to take advantage of screen segmentation. I have an Acer Iconia W500 I'm playing with here (1280x800), and it sucks compared to the Samsung Series 7 slate we also have.

  • I've just received email from ozstock and they are cancelling all the orders.

    From ozstock:
"Thank you for purchasing with us. But we are sorry to inform you that some of the HP laptops are in unacceptable condition and we have rejected them, therefore unfortunately we have to cancel your order. And we will give you full refund shortly. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused!"

  • anyone managed to get touch gestures working with the stylus on Windows 8 consumer preview?
