Best 75" 4K TV for Video Viewing, VR, Xbox 4K Gaming etc (Budget $4k to $8k)

Hello Ozbarigners,

I put this request to the techies here as I've tried to do research but all the sites I find feel just like advertisements.

I'm looking to upgrade the Family Room TV from an old 55inch plasma to something much more 2021.

We've settled on 75 inch as it seems to be the right size for our space. The main couch is 2.5m away from where the TV will be and faces it directly. There are other couches on 90 degree angles from this couch. The room is doesn't have an windows that directly hit the TV and it can get dark in the daytime with blackout curtains if any of that helps. That being said size is negotiable but when I measured out 85 inches it seems far too big for our space. TV can't be wall mounted and will sit on a TV unit that is 140cm long and 52cm wide so the base needs to fit on there. There's space for the TV to be larger than this unit on both sides it's just the base that needs to fit on there.

The TV is used primarily for HD television, Netflix, Prime, Stan, Disney streaming services. We also VR and Chromecast that on the big screen and the kids play Xbox. We have an Xbox Series X so would like 4K gaming without any lag at 60fps. The Xbox is also used with Kodi to play 4K movies and Blue rays and we have a Fetch TV Mighty PVR that was use top record TV and play back. Currently we use the fetch TV apps to do all the streaming stuff as the old Plasma is not a Smart TV. Android TV seems to be a big thing nowadays. Sound is secondary but needs to be decent for TV streams. We HDMI plug the Xbox into an Amp and use that get our 5.1 surround sound for gaming and Blu-ray/4K movies from there. We can also use the streaming apps on that for 5.1 movies streaming.

Budget is between $4k and $8k but the closer we get to $8k the harder it gets to convince the misses to pull the trigger. No brand loyalty or models in mind at this time. We're based in Sydney and have access to a 2T Van to pick up from any stores and delivery is fine.

  • oled is prolly the only panel that will seem like an upgrade from plasma.

I will miss the free heating the Plasma provided in Winter.

      My vote would be LG C1 - 77" for $6.5k or 65" for $3.5k.

  • -1

I'd probably go for the Sony A80J 77" OLED.

    • +2

Perhaps C1 instead? It has 2 more HDMI 2.1 ports plus VRR and ALLM.

      • +1

Either of these would do the trick.

      • Thanks Shorty I forgot about VRR. You're referring to the LG 77 C1 when you say C1?

        • 77" or 65" - given the 2.5m viewing distance, 65" should be ok.

  • +1

I am in a very similar position, and have also arrived at the LG 77" C1 (or G1) being the logical choice. Really struggling to retire my 58" Viera though…it's been such an awesome TV…still is in fact!

    • +1

The Panny Vieras are nearly extinct. 😥

      OP would want a C1 as they can't wall mount a G1.

  • Have you considered a projector? I have the BenQ W2700 and paid $2300 for it. The best gaming 4K 120' experience I have had so far!

    • I did consider and projector but withe pretty quickly vetoed by the misses.

      • Then 77' OLED is the answer!
65" is the new 55' so it'll be tiny. Bigger the better!

        • 77 foot TV? wow…

@MrBear: LOL ok .. let me correct for you.
            6.41667'

    • How's your experience with a projector ? Especially in a living room where there will definitely be lots of light sources from windows and lights around. Would you say the image would be pretty washed out unless you have something that has super high lumens ?

      • +1

Many modern projectors these days use high lumens bulb meaning that even during the day that can be used due to its high brightness.

I'm talking about reputable brands and not the 'Wish' or 'eBay' generic 1080p junk they sell for $300.

However, owning several; spanning over several years, if you want the best experience you wont look back.
For a daily TV in my living room is 1080p projector; 120' and sit back ~10 meters as I am eating my dinner watching the news comfortably, without squinting. Excellent picture quality. HDTV is OK (as broadcast is average from coax) but for movies it's awesome.

Tbh, it works the best when the room is semi-dark. If you have a lot of ambient/diffused light then it will look a little washed out where you have to lower your blinds to get to the sweet spot. Normal outdoor light works OK. Depending how you interpret that.

My theatre room has the faux-4K projector however it is dark and looks awesome.
How does it compare to an OLED/LED TV?
The images from these TV's will be always better. However the projector will be not too far however you need the real estate.

        The negs of projector are:
        - Mounting requirements, roof cutting etc, running HDMI cables (and upgrading HDMI in future). There are wireless (for signal) but the projector still needs power. However wireless is never good as wired.
        - Ambient light (excessive)
        - An external TV tuner is required to watch TV. Some have OS inbuilt but would run an external box.
        - Throw distance. Some people just buy and mount thinking they will get 120' from 2 meters away. Must do research on this one!
        - Replacing bulb after a few years. Usually $250 however if the bulb explodes (not the usual implode) then it can damage internal electronics.
        - Response time is less. Depending on projector
        - Start time is usually a minute whereas a TV is practically instant.
        - Image quality not as good as TV's (but close)
        - Need room to display image.

        Pros:
        - Size. Cheap 120'+ screen for the price of a 65' equivalent TV
        - Overall experience A high end HT/audiophile seller is not going to sell their $33K B&W diamond speakers next to an LG 65' (or even 77') TV!
        - Compact.. if you want to resell, you don't 2 x people to lift and load into a car/truck.
        - Later units have very high lumens so ambient light still delivers good viewing experience.
        - Warranty - Usually reputable brands have 2 years standard whereas an $8K LG OLED has only 1 year. (but you can fight that with ACL)
        - No need to projector screen if your wall is white.
        - Adjustable size. If you have the room, you can adjust zoom and change it from 120' to 140' in an instant!
        - Lens shift (depending on projector). You don't have to mount it directly in front of image if there are obstacles in the way!
        - Price.
        - Upgrading. When tech gets better, you are not going to regret spending $8K on a 77' TV that may be worth $2000. You spend a 1/3rd in time and get an update.

  • C1 83” without a doubt. You would be in heaven lol

  • +2

At this budget and required specs, it is not even a debate. 100% C1 77'. 5ms input latency at 120hz. Some "gaming" monitors cant even achieve that.

  • Are there any Mini-LED TV's yet?

They are apparently going to be so much better than OLEDs

    • Geez that is a good price. I've never heard of Billyguyatts are they legit?

      • Good Guys can do $5996 If you call them up as they had them that price last week, I just got a 77C1 myself and it's awesome for movies and gaming would highly recommend it for price and quality vs the Sony

      • Billy Guyatts is legit. I think Stan Cash is their sister store. Both were big stores in Melbourne back in the 1980s before JB Hi Fi took over discount electronics.

Both stores do have good prices and though I have purchased from there, I have also used them to price match at another store.

  • Well it has to be LG, of course

  • Haven't heard of either but that's probably because I'm Sydney based. Spoke to them to check stock levels and they say it just gets drop shipped from LG so not sure on stock levels.
