My domain registrar wants to almost double the price to renew my domain for another year, so I am on the look out for a better deal.

Don't forget that if you get a .com domain you are under the jurisdiction of the American authorities. If anyone decides that they want to claim "copyright" or some other infringement, you are liable to get your site shut down/taken over by US law enforcement without explanation or recourse.
Yes, it's been done to a few sites. Especially worry if you have anything to do with music or movies. Or allow site users to post comments (links).
