Recommend: Single Speed Bicycle (New) (Online/Instore)

Can anyone suggest or recommend a decent brand in Melbourne who sells Single Speed Bicycle ?

I have seen one at decathlon store which is very basic version.

Understand there is used bike available via FB, Gumtree. At this stage looking for new option for $500-700

  • Do you want to try before you buy? For sizing? Or happy to buy unseen?

    • Depends on the bike, it's unknown to me at the minute.

I have looked online so far. decathlon sells one model for $300 approx road bike style.
JRI in CBD, sells few but business model is not ethical ( heard from friend)

  • What sort of single speed? Cruiser or road bike Any particular reason you want SS?

If it was me, I’d be buying second hand.

    • Road Bike type, back up cycle. Also want to practise and learn maintenance works.

Used bike segment is little over priced and decent model getting picked or sold within hour of posting.
Having said, keeping an eye there too.

Not a lot of maintenance to learn with a single speed! A geared bike isn’t that much more complex in terms of maintenance. Once you learn to adjust gears and replace cables you are gold.

Other thing is, you could get pretty much any crappy old single speed and throw on some brake pads and tyres and it’ll likely last forever - as long as it isn’t overly rusty and all the bits that spin are relatively free spinning. Have torn down and repaired quite a few cheap SS cruisers. There isn’t much to go wrong.

        • I have a polygon hybrid bike, bit hesitant to open apart or fix things. As it’s fairly new so don’t think it will fall apart soon.

Decathlon’s single speed I can get for $240 (after discount), used ones are first hard to obtain and no warranty as such, price range is still $150 plus in most cases.

Reid’s also sell few options but not sure if worth going this path.

My last resort will be above bike from decathlon and on need basis fix things so hopefully will be good start. ( once in stock, if)

Intention of post to look for areas outside of my knowledge

I'm understanding you are looking to learn a new skill? I'd get a junk bike off the side of the road, and try to fix it. If it can't be fixed, pick up another and use parts from both to get it going. I did this as a kid with no money to spend. Pulled one completely down, resprayed it, and put it back together. Learnt how just about every part worked along the way.

    • thanks its good idea, to do.
If can find functional bike at cheap, that will do the trick for me as well.

Check out local bike co-ops. They will often have very cheap bikes available.

If it’s cheap, you can pull it apart and put it together easily. Additionally, if it sucks to ride once your done you can sell it for cheap quickly.
