Has Anyone Notice a Lot of Drivers Swinging Over / Crossing The Line before Turning?

I've notice there are a lot of drivers that lean over to the left or right, even partially cross over the line to make a turn?

This is dangerous as you are squeezing / collide with the car in the next lane.

There's plenty of space to do the turn without leaning over so why do people do it?

Probably learned their driving on Forza Horizon with racing lines turned on.

But to your point, yes, very annoyed with that as well. People seem to think they are making aggressive corner turns that require a wide approach when at 15km/h they'd be completely fine.

    Mostly SUVs that do this.

      Mostly SUVs that do this.

I've found it's more often the smaller the car the large the swing before turning.

Just pull up at the lights really close to them so they cannot turn until you go.

Only do this if you're in a truck though.

    • Kinda hard because most times the left lane goes straight and the right lane turns right or can go straight

  • Lack of confidence, lack of skill, bad driver training.
Probably smacked the rear wheel on a curb whilst driving like a moron and this stops them from doing that (but may cause problems for other drivers as you've stated).

  • why do people do it?

Weight shift for a better turn to go into a drift? /s

Nah, just crap drivers not paying attention to their actions.

I have noticed the other way as well. People swing right before turning left.

I can't stand these drivers. "Let me block the road as I turn left so I can save myself 1/2 of a steering wheel turn."

    • True

  • STOP SWINGING!

People are taught this to avoid kerbing the wheels, but equally effective is moving a bit more forward before initiating the turn. Not so hard!

    • Don't kerb the wheels but crash into the car next to you. Crazies.

  • " why do people do it?"

Sorry officer. COVID made me do it!

I forgot how to drive after such a lot of time after being in lockdown, and I've just become a 5#17 driver!

Or in my case - I'm becoming a distracted 9r1(k, I've forgotten what the outside world looks like… Oh and other times, just become lazy!

By no means defending it, but it's obvious why people do it. The larger the turn radius, the less g-forces the driver experiences at a given speed, since the centripetal force is mv^2/r.

So basically, people do this because they either don't want to slow down or don't want to have the discomfort of being thrown around in their car.

Also, yes, SUVs more likely to do this because being higher up from the ground will increase their centre of gravity and, hence, exacerbate the g-force.

arg, people who swing before turning…….

what do they think they are driving, a fukn bus or B double?

I also see lots of people coming to an almost complete stop before turning corners.

    • And they don't accelerate after turning

i'm sure everyone in ozbargain doesn't do this, right? right?

"dry turning" had to bing that one
certainly recall being taught to not do that

Another habit I noticed is that some drivers would slow down a lot for like a kilometre before they come to the street they'll turn into so that they could get the drivers behind them to change lanes. Kinda annoying.

Some left turns (into equally narrow 2 lane traffic) are tight. If you don't keep to the right before making the left turn, your turn will be wide and you'll end up head-first into opposite traffic. Quite a few supermarket carparks are like this.

Always love watching a car swing wide for a corner while i go around it in a truck without doing it.

Alternately, it’s probably those same people that come up beside me when i do need two lanes to turn.

  • I think this is just another symptom of too many of us. Like driving in Sydney or Melbourne - everyone is angry, and stuck, and would rather be somewhere else. Yet they do it again and again and again. Our numbers are just too great - there is competition for everything, including space on the roads, along with parking, shopping, trying to do laps at the pool, trying to get stuff done at the gym - everything.

Generally car drivers suck. They're not really drivers, or interested, or focused. Truck drivers and motorcyclists are a different bunch - motorcyclists because of passion / interest, truck drivers because of professionalism. I ride bikes and drive trucks - I'm amazed at the mindlessness of car drivers; they just don't think or consider what they are doing - some are good of course. On the bike I ride for them as well as me, in the truck I give lots of warning, no fast moves, always watch the mirrors, and hold steady, then watch all the f***wit maneuvers around me.

  • Merged from Why Do Drivers Do This???

When turning right why do some motorists via left before they go right?

Same thing when turning left. Some via right before turning left?

What is wrong with these drivers??

I was driving straight when a car turning right came partially into my lane even though they were going right into a side street.😶😶.
Had to move over and clipped the gutter.

Why do drivers do this, it has happened previously!

    • just (profanity) drivers really, stay calm and keep driving.

or they played Gran Turismo too often and forgot real road vs game/track. :D

      • I probably should have checked if it was a duplicate.

Im currently playing GTA just to unleash some steam on how i feel about the people in our society atm.

      "…via right…via left…". Do you mean "veer"?

      • I stand corrected 🤣

        • Even the original post (that this has been merged with) states "…are a lot of drivers that lean over to the left or right…".
Surely it wouldn't matter if a driver leaned or not. On a motorbike, sure, but if they are sitting in a car totally irrelevant.

YES IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS

QUITE IRRITATING, SLOW DOWN UR CARS SUFFICIENTLY TO TURN!
