Stubborn Exhaust Tip

The Proton strikes back!

The other day I went to supercheap auto to buy some accessories for my car and an exhaust tip caught my eye… I ended up buying it returned home and assumed to take off the old one'd unscrew it and/or pull it off, but it wasn't having any of it. My old tip won't come off and now I just have a spare exhaust tip in my boot. Any ideas of how I can get it off? is cutting off my only option?

  • It's probably spot welded on.

    Any pictures?

It almost definitely welded on. Just take it to an exhaust shop.

    • Might cost more than the $20 OP bought ;)

      • Probably, haha. Still shouldn't cost too much. I had a catback installed for $100 so tips won't be too much

        • How much was the catback if the install price was $100?

          • @Zachary: It doesn't matter. For a pro it's literally a 15 minute job. Undo about 4 bolts. Wiggle a few exhaust hangers. Add a gasket or some goo and reversal of the removal.

Total cost is typically about $40. In this case an extra $60 was paid for the mechanic to over torque the bolts back on with a rattle gun to ensure that in the future a plasma cutter will be required for cat back replacement.

            • @MS Paint: Still a better job than what I would've done.

            • @MS Paint: I thought it would matter - more expensive = higher install price?

              • @Zachary: A mandrel bent titanium exhaust costs a lot more than a steel junk exhaust.

                Install takes the same effort.

                • @MS Paint: oh, so what's so special about titanium exhausts? Isn't stainless steel a thing? Surely that's enough water proofing so it can't rust?

                  • @Zachary: Titanium is light, strong and delivers an awesome exhaust tone.

          • @Zachary: Exhaust itself wasn't cheap. $1,400 for an Australian made twin pipe cat back but purchased elsewhere. I just rocked up to exhaust shop on a Saturday morning and as MS paint said they just wack it on.

$20 for an exhaust tip on a Proton… if it falls off and you lose it, that car is going to be an economical write off. Going to cost over 50% of the vehicles value to get a new exhaust tip…

    it's not worth it.

Unfortunately putting an exhaust tip on a Proton contrary to popular belief will not get the pu$$y

Won't make you go faster but mentally it will get you all that you wish for.

Buying an exhaust tip is a good waste of money.

  • I'm surprised your Proton still runs!

    • Should last a while according to google

The maximum upper limit on proton lifetime (if unstable), is calculated at 6 × 1039 years

  • Was going to defend OP but the Satria GTi have dual tips.

  • What precisely is the the problem? I presume you were meant to add that the locking screen is seized and unable to be turned loose.

You have a number of options and they are

  • Don't listen to these Stick In The Muds, get the tips put on, it will look cool.
