What Is This in My Backyard? Sewer Related

What's this at the back of my yard?

https://imgur.com/a/nCad0im

I suspect that it's sewer related due to underground sewer line running at the back fence. However, I have NFI what this is, and I've exhausted my google powers to try and find out.

Basically, it's a massive tripping hazard sticking out about 20cm. Only about 10cm in diameter, but a real pain. Happy for access to remain, but would love to put a different cover/etc on it.

  1. What is it?
  2. Does it need ventilation?
  3. Can I change the top of it to still remain accessible with a flat grate/some other type of cover?

Ideally, I want to make my kid a mudpit in this area. What I don't want is for him to be able to lodge this thing full of dirt and toys and crap. Hence why I want to change it out.

  • Septic tank inspection port

    • Really find that difficult to believe that it's septic tank. On the title it shows the sewer line running right near it, and this as an I.O (inspection opening). But it was a 1950s diagram that had these IOs every 10m leading to the house. This is the only one still remaining/visable.

It's probably a Cleanout pipe then

It's a conduit that probably allows a plumber to unclog pipes. But I'm not sure why it needs to stick out so far above the ground and I've not seen this particular shape either. Normally they're made of PVC and have a cap on it, rather than a grate.

  • It is an I.O. You can lower it. If you have a vent on the line you can put a loose fitting cap on it.

Above are correct, it's an inspection opening/overflow relief gully.

looking at the picture again, dang its old. And the shape of it would lead me to believe its serving as a vent.

      • If it was a vent, would it let off smells? Cos it doesn't give off anything.

        • You wouldn't really notice a smell. Should be fine to lower, just have a loose fitting cap over it that's all.

You need to light it - its the olympic torch.

  • Ours has a lid, had sewer blockage between house and IO after we moved into property and became a poop fountain when I lifted it. Great party Trick!

    Sounds a bit $#17…

Sorry for taking the p155. aaahhhh ahhahahaha…

Sounds like everyone else has already wiped this one up for you. :)

  • Air vent for the hidden bunker.

  • Lilliput's water tower?

  • if it's sewer related, you'd most likely need to used an appropriately licensed plumber to make changes to it, and handy they would be able to confirm what it is too.

It's probably up off the ground so storm water run-off cant flow into the sewer…

You're sitting on a bit of a fortune there. Better sell it off before Clover Moore whacks a heritage order on it
