eBay New Managed Payment Platform & Gumtree Free Listing & FVF Promo Problem

Has anybody else had issues getting their Gumtree listings that sell on Ebay to be credited back into their account?

I have been happily taking advantage of the 2 x Free Gumtree Listing to Ebay Promo every month and have been selling a bit of stuff over the past year. In all that time I only had one issue with a sale FVF not being reimbursed and ebay quickly rectified this. When the new Ebay Managed Payment System coming into effect I foresaw that it would create drama, and it did.

Lo and behold, the first month since they have forced all sellers onto managed payments, ebay are automatically deducting their fees and sending the leftover amount to my bank account. No fee credit or reimbursements. No explanation whatsoever.

I have contacted LiveChat about 4 times now and their excuse each time is that "it's unusual because fee credits are automatically system generated but they are going to investigate/escalate it with their technical support team" but cannot give me a time frame to resolve the issue nor make any guarantees I will even get the money back. It's the going around in circles that is most frustrating. I'm hesitant to add any more listings next month because I don't want to go through this drama trying to get my fees reimbursed every time.

Is there more I can do? It's only about $20 in fees but I want to hold these big corporations accountable. Maybe I should just stick to selling on other platforms and finally be done with feebay.

  • yes exactly the same issue. still chasing up every month .. no credit back yet

    • At first I thought it might have been caused due to certain information appearing differently between Ebay and Gumtree. e.g. if they matched up my customer details in a database side-by-side, the phone number and email address would be different on both platforms and potentially cause a mismatch. The fact that this wasn't an issue in the past makes me skeptical of their excuses. Ebay has assured me that their new managed payment system is not the cause of this issue either, but it all seems like lies and excuses to me.

This makes me angry. Are you going to give up or fight them?

      • i will contact them in a couple of weeks when i haven't received the credit, and give the full transcript of the multiple conversations i have had with them regarding it.

Yet another reason why I've stopped selling on eBay. You can't win with the scammers, exorbitant fees, and Call Centre staff who have no clue, will tell you anything, and don't seem to care.

    • "will tell you anything" is not quite true, when things get difficult they will always tell you they will escalate the matter. Which of course is another way of saying cannot help, goodbye.

  • $20 don't waste your time .

  • Yeah the gumtree promo never works for me, but luckily live chat are happy to credit the fees

    • The operator advised that they would only be able to offer a fee credit in due course, if their tech support team decline it. It seems we are getting shafted by ebay.

I had a serious fight with eBay but that was for a sizeable $200 in fees that supposed to be waived as part of the Gumtree 2 items per month FVF waiver, it took me 2 months.

I did complain to Consumer Affairs in VIC and also ACCC as this is a clear abuse of the ownership of both platforms, I also made a lengthy submission to ACCC's digital platforms monitoring inquiry https://www.accc.gov.au/focus-areas/inquiries-ongoing/digita…

In the interim I am only listing some deadwood on eBay that occasionally sells and I don't care if they take their 15%. For highly liquid items like electronics etc I switched to Gumtree and FB marketplace.

I'm glad you took the fight to them and won. These companies need to be held accountable. If they don't want to give us free listings, then they shouldn't offer it in the first place. It will be interesting to see if they tread carefully with you as a customer in the future, since you made escalations and complaints to govt.

I have just reached this stage. So frustrated with ebay. The amount of stress it caused me was not worth it. I sold an item which the buyer claimed was faulty for a free refund and return. One battery was not working and i kept stressing that but ebay found in their favour. I cancelled my ebay account but i have things i want to sell or get rid off.
Do you recommend using Gumtree or FB marketplace? I have not used either. I was thinking of just donating everything to the salvos but want to make some money too as some items are costly.
How are things going selling on those platforms?

Facebook market has been a godsend for me. Big platform of buyers and most things sell quickly if priced correctly. Gumtree is a bit of a mixed bag but I have been able to sell a few things on there, including a big ticket item.
I think you made the right decision to close your ebay account. Good riddance!

        • Thank you. I will give FB marketplace a go.

  • Well this will all be moot in around 31 days or so.
The sale of gumtree by eBay should be finalised by October 1 apparently.

The promo will be gone once eBay doesn’t own gumtree anymore.

  • Update - Good news. I just received this email from ebay. It doesn't specify exactly how they will credit the fees but time will tell.

    "Hello XXX,

This email is with regards to the credit request under eBay-Gumtree promotion for item XXX.

As promised to you, we had our promotion team working through the manual credits for the items you have listed under our “List and Sell for free up to 2 items per month when you post your Gumtree Ad to eBay” promotion. I am happy to share that we have successfully credited the fee for the items under this promotion.

Unfortunately, we have experienced a few technical difficulties with this promotion which has taken this additional time to process the credits manually. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

I appreciate the opportunity to have helped you with this information. Please do take care of your family and yourself in this emergency situation of corona virus. I wish you and your beloved ones good health. Stay safe !

    Kind Regards,
