Is It OK to Work from Home in an Oodie?

Just seeing what the bargaining community thinks on this one.

If you are working remotely, is it OK to WFH wearing an Oodie?

I think the surge demand in Oodies, many of us have to go on a long waitlist.

And which is more appropriate… Smashed Avo on toast, mandolarian or maybe a coffee cup one..

Cheers,

No judgement from me if you show up in a video meeting with your Oodie. If you show up in the office after lockdown with it on though …

Just so long as you take it off before you go out driving in your car…

Might be ok with face mask tho.

Does not matter what you wear or not wear.

I had to Google what a Oodie is…… Perfectly fine, unless it's web cam

  • that's winter, guess what we will wear in summer…

    • Of course nothing !

  • But is it okay to wear this?

    • +1

No. What a disgusting waste of money.

      • That's an understatement.

Why? It's only 6,625 cups of coffee!!

I wear my toast and avo ones working from home. I've been in meetings where I wasn't the only one in an Oodie haha

    • Not all heroes wear Oodies

Wear nothing if you like. If it's on the pc or phone, who can see you anyway?

However, if you're on video with external parties (clients etc) or management, then you may have a bit of an issue.

  • Oodie, crocs… Shit, man… You do you.

I don't think so. I think getting dressed into something appropriate and work-like (even if it is just a polo shirt or un-ironed button up) is an important part of WFH hygine for both productivity at work, and being able to disconnect from work afterwards (when you take off your jumper and chuck on your oodie etc).

For work meetings I think it is generally less-than-ideal to wear an oodie on a web conference unless there is a particular theme or casual day etc.

I appreciate the legitimate answer. I think it's better to have a professional appearance if you're working from home it helps frame yourself to work.

I was at a job interview via zoom and the HR rep had a night gown on.

    • Lol that's hilarious..

Plot twist: elgrande is the HR rep

        • +2

2nd Plot twist this was a fake interview and there is no job… Casting couch.

            @mousie: Oh there's a job alright ;)

    • I was interviewing with a Japanese company and their senior management was wearing a hoodie and actually took it off mid session.

Made me feel silly with my full on tie and jacket(upper half only). The next few interviews were all in a collared tee/polo.

    • They were testing you.

  • Wearing an Oodie on a Zoom conference is far less offensive than Toobin-ing, so CNN says you're good to go.

I work from home naked so I'm guessing yes.

  • I don't think most people are attractive enough to pull off an Oodie on camera tbh.

    • I don't think anyone wearing an Oodie is attractive.

Looking on LinkedIn last week, I think it depends on the company. Optus just sent out Oodie's to all their employee's, so I'm sure they're fine with people wearing them.

Then you have places like CommBank, who I just interviewed with. They aren't allowed to use their video during business hours, so I'm sure it's fine there too, as no one can tell.

My perspective is, if it's cold and you're doing your work, who cares. I personally would like to do away with the suit for work, and head towards smart-casual being the standard.

    • +1

They don't do VCs during business hours?

  • no, completely unacceptable. just because you are working from home doesn't mean you don't dress up properly.
make sure you put on your suit and tie, walk out of your house, get in your car, get out of your car, walk back into your house, then start working.

    • What if you take the train to work?

      • it's just the act of leaving the house and entering into a building to give that effect that you went to work. So you can walk part of the way or the full way to the train station, and then go to the office (home).

        • Doesn't do it for me sorry. I only switch on for challenges that reward my brain with that accomplishment feeling. So turning up to work isn't part of that process.

    On webcam? Nah.
Just working away? Sure, why not.

I think the appropriate Ozbargain answer is: if it's saving you money on your heating bills then go for it! I live in Canberra, there are mornings where my home office is 7-8oC. Last year I'd be wasting money heating the room up for an hour to get it up to 17, and then putting it on again during the day as it dropped down to 15 or so. These days I chuck on my oodie and rarely notice if it drops down to 13, it's legit saving me a dollar or two a day I reckon.

If you're just spending your day working solo, doing email, chatting to colleagues, who cares what you're wearing? And I've certainly noticed in Pandemic: Year 2 that even my senior execs are rocking up to meetings in hoodies, zip ups etc. It's like the corporate world is finally realising what IT has known all along - it's not what you wear, it's what you do and how well you do it.
