I was looking for a SSD for this USB enclosure and found this SSD.

Warning: performance might vary from initial reviews, WD have been swapping out parts and not being fully transparent (as other manufacturers have too) but perhaps explains why the sudden price drop

yep, I have also added toms link to the description, so does this apply only for files larger than 12 GB ?

    Be careful buying WD products.
First they added SMR to their mechanical drives without telling anyone, now they've been caught significantly lowering their SSD specs without telling anyone.

So Crucial swapped out the TLC with QLC on their P2s, and now WD most likely did the same with the Blues.
Kingston seems to be phasing out the TLC A2000s with some weirdly named QLC model.

So is there anything left in the budget TLC NVME category?

As mentioned above. Likely new product submarining crappy memory into an established product line.

So basically a bottom of the barrel product with a big ethical question mark. Only a deal if costs considerably less than other bottom of the barrel products (which this does not).

  • I don't know much about comp specs but can someone recommend me a very good 2 Tb ssd on Amazon with very fast speeds. He said something about it needing nvime pci (something like that), said the specs of this looks good but hesitant after the above comments.

Beware of the WD bait and switch.

  • Can someone please recommend me an alternative, I was considering getting this. Preferably around the same price.

    Bought before checking Ozbargain, lol.

Made my mind up just a few days ago after reading many many reviews. Some mentioned Kingston, PNY etc for swapping for inferior components. Thought WD was a good one…

They were on sale for around $130 pretty consistently since the end of 2020. Naturally, I thought this is a good deal, definitely not too good to be true. I guess I'll find out in 10 days.

Me too, currently package is at Rochester, Medway GB

Ok, I'm here to report what I received.

I got 060528 1T00, not the 002031 1T00 reported by Tomshardware, and the firmware is 211210WD, made in Malaysia. TxBENCH 300GB seq write test result shows write speed was 2GB/s for 6 seconds, then dropped to 880 to 890MB/s. Which is more then double the speed quoted in that article.

Now, what's interesting is that WD announced that they have swapped NAND since June 2021. But mine was manufactured on 16Jul2021. Tomshardware quote the test results from a Chinese news outlet. Does WD sell the same product with different components in a different country? Now, that's not just an ethical issue, but also market discrimination…

BTW, it seems Auspost in NSW repacked the package from Amazon UK, and they did a terrible job.

    • Thanks for the update mate! Fingers crossed, hopefully mine will arrive soon. How long did it take to arrive after below tracking info?

      Package left the carrier facility
      Gb,

Seems like you got the old FW version but with a slightly different flash memory, There are number of uses in many other countries with same FW (not sure about the purchase date though)

No worries mate. Left on 28th according to Amazon, received yesterday. I ordered 1 day earlier than this deal.

According to the Tomshardware article, mine is the old version NAND, same part number. Which contradicts WD’s statement saying they swapped components after June 2021. That’s why I suspect they supply different product to different countries.

Not sure if Firmware will make any difference tbh.

just got mine and I think we are the lucky ones, I got SanDisk 060523 1T00 + 211210WD firmware, DOM: 21JUL2021, made in Malaysia.

          • @bazingaa: guys. . how do you check the flash memory and the firmware of your drive? I just got mine WD SN550 and want to check if I got the older version too. . thanks
