AAMI Car Insurance Quote. New Question Added??

I am currently insured with AAMI. Renewal not due for another month or so..

I have noticed a new question is now displayed when putting in a quote.

"Is the car driven three or more weekdays, on average, between the following peak times?
7:30am-9:30am and/or 3pm-6:30pm"

AAMI for real asking this? Are they are turning into Youi?

edit: My premium has gone up $250 and that is with me out of a job at the moment until schools re-open. I remember growing up and hearing from older people that premiums would be lower as you get older. What a bloody myth that was!

  • I always wonder when they ask questions like that. How would they know when someone drives their car?

    • I picture this:

      Car accident occurs.
      Claim submitted.

"Sorry Mr ineed2pee, but you were driving your car at 6:25pm and this was your 4th day on the road during the week"

      Claim denied.

I was thinking that but what's to stop someone saying that was my first time driving it at that time this week. The other days I had been driving my neighbours partners dog groomers car.

Q: Would you do me a favor and just flip over to Section U, please?

A: There is no Section U.

  • How much was the difference when you said you were/were not driving during those times

    • $1525.00 per year (Driving at those times and 3/4 days a week)

$1432 per year (Not driving peak hours but driving 1/2 days per week)

I found that same question with a couple of insurers, must be the same underwriter has added it. It is worth getting getting quotes from a few insurance companies, I got quotes ranging from $800 ($300 cheaper than my current insurer) to $2900, all for the same inclusions.

They’ve been asking how many kms you travel for a while and always ask postcode. Not surprising they are trying to narrow down risk rating by when/where you drive.

Lucky my work starts and finishes outside peak hours.

As for Youi, can’t be bothered talking to someone to ‘get a better deal’. Just put your questions on the website quite calculator so I can get a price online. It’s not hard to program a few more questions that are on the script the call centre uses.

Talking to a person puts me off Youii

  • I remember growing up and hearing from older people that premiums would be lower as you get older.

Average driving quality has altogether become much worse, so definitely not.

    • What they meant was when you continue to insure you will get more no claim bonus up to the max and therefore your premium will reduce. The way premiums in crease these days they outrun any discount for no claim bonus :-(
It had nothing to do with driving skill etc..

  • One of the car insurance quotes I got required you to have your phone in a car phone holder with their app running at all times. If you had an accident and you didn't have the app running, they won't honour your claim.

I hope this doesn't become commonplace with the other insurance agencies.

Which crappy insurance provider is that?

      • Cannot for the life of me remember and a quick Google search is revealing nothing. It was a mob I'd never heard of and when I saw their prerequisites, I bailed.

      • its Carpeesh

        • What an absolutely rubbish website

AAMI offered free road-side assist back in 2015 if you used a dedicated tracking app that they launched and scored high enough from good driving. It wasn't compulsory for your insurance but it got some media attention. Sounds like QBE had one too. Not sure when it disappeared but the AAMI Safe Driver app doesn't seem to be around today. I'm glad it didn't become compulsory and commonplace back then.

  • Sounds like risk profiling - if you drive during peak hours, the chance of an accident would increase.

When school is back, 3 of 5 weekdays you'll arrive early (before 7:30am) and leave before 3pm (or after 6:30pm). :)

  • Are you checking online ? If you are with them already you can just call their contact number and tell them you want to renew the policy for another year. I was able to renew for another year with same price as this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/567112

  • Can we let the insurance expire and then get new quote from Aami? My renewal is quite high and also I think first year had free roadside assistance

    • Yes, but you won’t be covered while it’s expired so keep the car in a garage until you get cover.

    • nothing stopping you from getting a quote for same period as renewal & just paying whichever is cheaper….
