"Click & Collect" Newly Bought Car

Hi All,

So I ordered a car from VW early this year and was expecting delivery to be sometime mid-Sept. Apparently it's arriving early but I'm being rushed to come and pick up the car.

My issue is that I live more than 5km away from the showroom and they don't do delivery (they say they have an agreement with the gov to just do "click & collect"). They ensured me that they are part of the "essential" business open and IF i get questioned by the cops, I could just show my contract with the delivery date and that would suffice .

Any thoughts on whether that's legit? What options do I have?

Any advice , comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • With our first VW car, dealer dropped car to our door. That was decades ago. Maybe they could do same with you?

    • Tried asking for it to be delivered, even offered to pay extra but they say they can't. They have there own agreement with the gov apparently.

Like the agreement they can just be lazy. Imagine every business having their side deals with the government.

Mate in Goulburn went to buy a new DR650 few days ago.
Wasn't allowed in shop, wasn't allowed to touch it, had to stand behind a rope at the front door while the bloke pointed to the bike.

Be interesting when it comes to paperwork time tomorrow and pickup.

    Strange days indeed…

Well I am sure they want to get paid. So if you tell them you want delivery or they will need to wait, I am sure that they will make an effort.

I am guessing they can’t get paid until you have signed the papers anyway.

playing chicken with an item that op had to wait many months to get, brave.

I'm sure they just sell it to someone else for more money if OP doesn't take it.

Trust me if its a model in demand i.e. GTI or R, they will sell it onto someone else. I am in the same position at present and i said that i couldnt come to sign paperwork at present or collect due to the lockdown. They basically said if i couldnt commit to the deal they would basically sell it within a day as its a high demand car and they have a waiting list.

I don't think it will matter if it's ready early today or in mid September. Not much will be changing with regards to lockdowns by then.

I suppose if the car is "essential" you'd be allowed to collect. Perhaps call the info line.

I would call the info line just to be sure. Personally I would be OK with picking it up from the dealership (assuming you are not too far!), just to make sure everything is as expected/per contract.

A mate recently picked up a new Hyundai SUV and it was missing paint protection and a few other minor options/extras that were specified in the order.

    Probably be ok

"Stay within your local government area. You can cross into another local government area if it is within 5km of your home and it is not a local government area of concern (unless the food or goods or services or their equivalent are not reasonably available locally)."

I presume no other car yard within 5km?

It shouldn't matter if there is or isn't another car yard within 5km of OP. OP has committed to buying a particular car from a particular dealer.

Is your car available within 5km? No? Then go pick it up.

    Or use the excuse

    undertake legal obligations

You have a legal obligation to pick it up and complete the contract of sale.

You have a legal obligation to pick it up and complete the contract of sale.

But you dont… they just cancel it and sell it to the 5000 others waiting in line :)

    • Thank you for clarifying this. I wasn't sure whether the contract would fall under "legal obligations". I was thinking more court related stuff would fall under that.

Geez just go and get it lol.

  • I would deem a car to be essential. Toy cars and DVDs on the other hand…

Take the risk man are cops seriously pulling everyone over asking their address and distance

  • Plus what happy dude said. You can go outside 5km if the goods aren’t available closer. Talk to the dealer about how they manage the handover before you go they’ll probably have some sort of covid safe procedure.

Don’t take the whole tribe, just you and someone to drive your other car back if you aren’t trading in. Both drivers take a copy of an email or similar outlining what you are doing. Go straight there and straight back, don’t be tempted to go on a joyride detour.

    • & the other driver must live with OP

  • Is there a Chemist Warehouse near the VW ? If so then of course you went to get some meds and was > 5kms away from your home. Pick up car while coming back.

  • Yesterday I did a job 87km outside of my LGA, didn't see any cops out and about.
