Boba/Bubble Tea at Home

So want to recreate some bubble tea at home. Has anyone recreated their favourite milk tea at home using bubbletea.com.au and what value they've come down to per serving. Ordering out costs about $6-7 for a large last time I remember.

According to this recipe it's $32.20 + 8.80 shipping for 9 serves. If I buy in larger bags for each of the ingredients I can save more - perhaps $2-$4 per serving without the tea leaves. Do I need the "Assam Black Tea" in the recipe listed in the link, would the powder mix not contain enough tea flavour in itself?

Please advise Bubble Tea Masters.

Just follow this recipe. I always make it and its pretty close to the mainstream boba stores

    • Oh yeah also, I prefer adding some milk to this as I find the creamer doesn't make the boba milky enough

    Or get it from woolies?

  • Make your own BOBA. easy.

Just get a kit from one of those bubble tea kits shops online that walk you through the steps instead of trying to figure it all out from wholesale-oriented websites. Gimme bubble tea is a good one that has recipes. Once you get a kit and figured it out, then you can look into buying the ingredients wholesale if you want to save a bit more.

Also, you don't need a $15 to $20 dollar 'shaker' to make the tea. just swirl the powder with a spoon in your cup and you'll be fine.

  • I've tried BBT Club and Cup 24 for bubble tea kits - they send you everything needed in a kit. Pricier that kits you can find at a supermarket or Asian Grocery store, but I find BBT Club close to what I would get in a bubble tea shop.

If you're still based in Melbourne - Narocha is a store in the city that delivers - you can pick a bubble tea kit or ready made bubble tea in bundles =)

I keep buying those Avalanche bubble tea kits from Woolies because they're convenient but I'm going to stop because I think it's made by some white dudes from NZ who first started with coffee kits. Neg me if you like but I'd much rather buy from some authentic sellers and not some white people trying to profit from Asian culture.

You only need to buy pearls if you're just after regular milk tea/black/green tea anyway because the rest are pantry staples. If you want flavoured stuff then buying a kit would be handy.

But your happy to buy pantry staples from Woolies, a company run by a bunch of white guys.

Then you should really stop drinking tea. Like, Lipton and T2 stole the whole idea from Asia.

      • Not sure if you have heard of Dilmah tea before? They're only available in every single major supermarket in the country.

I have, and they are not run by white people you so against buying from.

By the way, if you purchase condensed milk, make sure it is milked from a Asian cow living in Asia. you really don't want the white to profit from it ;)

I tried it recently after all the hoo-ha over them. It tasted nothing like proper bubble tea - the tea was a weird milky flavour. I ended up just making proper tea with a teabag and sugar and mlk and adding the heated-up pearls to it. It was alright, but still nothing like a proper bbt.

I always buy mine from Bubble Tea Club and find them great. Just as good as I can get from the stores. I got the reusable straws and cup and then just get the ingredients. I only get ten of the Tea Bags in a kit but then I just buy a 100 pack from coles and use those with the bottles of ingredients and get lots of cups out of each kit. I would highly recommended it if you drink boba a lot.

If you have an Asian shop near you (and not in lockdown), Aik Cheong Teh Tarik 3in1 ($5-6+ for 15 pkts) is pretty close to milk tea, or is a pretty damn good drink anyway on its own. Then just get some boba and you're all set.
