Swann Master Series 4 Camera 8 Channel NVR Security System (2TB) $699 + Delivery ($0 to Select Areas/ C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

90

I've never posted but thought this might be of interest to some. I've been looking for a CCTV security system for a while. Seeing Swann is so popular in retailers I've been reading a lot of reviews, trying to understand some of their products, comparing prices for their never ending list of packages and it gets too confusing.

But from what I gather the common piece in these packages is currently the NVR-8580 which works across a lot of their "packages". Given I also have a couple of spare Swann cameras I've got through a friend and was looking into just purchasing just the NVR, so this might also be useful for someone in a similar situation. Given you get a few "4K cameras" (up scaled) for a few extra dollars.

In comparison Swann retail this for $799

and they sell just the NVR for $649.95

    NVR Security System

    Not Very Reliable ???

    • Just curious if you don't mind sharing your experience with it. Interface is not reliable? Is the remote connection not reliable? Camera connection is not reliable? Does smoke eventually come out of it not reliable? I am just looking to buy one and just have read mixed reviews but usually not explaining in detail what happened.

      • I don't know if this counts as a woooosh or not

I get the sarcasm and its a quiet clever play on letters, so that made me chuckle. I was hoping to genuinely get their side of the story to watch out for any possible issues they may have experienced that's all.

      • Don't take JV literally. :D

In any case the product actually looks good! I don't have this but I have the Arlo Pro 2 system. As Arlo is purely cloud (with hdd optional), wireless, and battery, its very different than this product and has pros and cons.

Biggest pro on Arlo? no wiring. you can put the base station and cameras anywhere you like and shift them around if you dont like it. Magnetic base of the cameras means you might not even need to install the mount to place it somewhere. Arlo pro 2 was the last in their line to come with free 7 day recording storage in the cloud - which was great for me cause I didn't want local storage - but it looks like you can link this Swann unit up with Dropbox.

Downside? its battery so you need to take it down to charge it every few months.. or weeks depending on how much recording it does. Wireless connection can be a miss if you have interference, large property, or just really thick walls.

This swann unit is also considerably cheaper, comes with light, and being wired should mean far better/faster connection (arlo pro 2 lags behind real-time around 15-30 secs). It's dark/night time capabilities seems far better than arlo as well. If you get this, you probably can't go too wrong but you just need to plan ahead where you want to place the cameras, and get them wired up.

          Downside? its battery

What about lack of continuous streaming?

        • Reading some of the specs on wireless cameras it's a convenience of installation compromised with performance and highly dependent on the quality of your wireless network and so on, but so far I've read a lot of people are happy with the easy installation if you want just a couple of cameras.

My biggest feature sell for this Swann is the PoE capability, running a single CAT6 wire instead of two, then accommodating a power board for your power supplies, dealing with quality loss of image due to analog cables and possible voltage drop across long distances. Image wise I am yet to find out so might give it a shot even just for the NVR and upgrade to better cameras later on.

Go to Jaycar. You might spend a bit more but they know everything about them. If you don't know what your doing it helps to have full returns policy and expert advice in which and what system is best for you. You buy from bunnings or JB and you wont get any help/info and they wont want any exchange or refunds… goodluck

I bought the Reolink yesterday and waiting for it to arrive from Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08MFGNQDF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_g…

It meets what I want to do and with the coupon is $699. I saw it had been less in the past but wanted urgently.

    • do you mind sharing the feedback on the Reolink? Quality, features, ease of use?

      • I watched a few videos the YOUTUBE channel TheHookUp was great check his out. I won’t get this for another week and then need to install.

By all reports it’s a very good system for the money. The app is great and person detection works really well.

I remember him saying the night vision isn’t as good as other cameras but that will be ok for me. I also believe it is black and white.

    Swann systems have bad reviews.
Their camera quality is mediocre (at least their older models were) and the software is unreliable. I know a few people who have older Swann systems, none of them are impressed with their systems.
I recently installed a Hikvision system with colorvu cameras, quite happy with the image quality, AI detection and reliability. Dahua is another good brand for CCTVs, both companies have cameras with very good picture quality.

      I second this
I've always had absolute rubbish experience with a variety Swann stuff, DVRs/NVRs, cameras, included cables.
      Rubbish app too
Lasted a few years max, discovered Annke and end up with what seems to be much better stuff for half the price

    • What did you spend though? 2 or 3k?

      • From what I recall around 1.8k for the system (4 cameras + 8ch NVR) and 1.2k for the install, total $3k. Whenever a significant install cost is involved, I try to install better hardware (F.Y.I you can’t install data cables in the roof space or walls without a licence meaning you can’t install this system yourself unless you already have the cables in place). Therefore when you look at the total cost, this Swann system will cost almost 2/3rd what I paid for mine, not a huge difference in price, but IMHO there could be a huge difference in quality.

Also I avoid products sold with fudged numbers, i.e: advertising a totally useless upscaled resolution instead of the actual figure. For all you know this could have a 720p sensor !

        • I've never heard of that law.
Both my electricians have told me to do it myself.

I use reolink for 4 years, very easy to setup, interface not the best but good enough.
I got no complaints about Reolink, would recommend to anyone.

Great title. Clearly states how many cameras you get not just how many channels it supports unlike many other posts about camera kits.

  • Stop looking at me Swann
