Picture looks like it was taken in the green bin

    Thanks OP, bought 10

  • Can I use it as a post box ?

  • hahaha, this is surely scraping the bottom of the…well the bin?

  • Great initiative from the council. My council is trying to collect $$ at every corner.

St kilda east or Caulfield North?

  • when they say free does it mean you won't be charged for it in the service fee like we are for the other bins which comes in the letter which includes sewage fees and some other random fees

The bin and caddy is free. Your council rates include paying for the weekly bin disposal just like the yellow and reds.

      • yeah but i'm assuming the rates would increase to include collection fees of these bins aswell so I would not say it is totally free

In maribyrnong council we could always request a green bin but they would charge us extra in our rates. No doubt everyone's rates will go up now by default to pay for this.

This is a load of horseshit to excuse collecting normal rubbish every second week.

As if I have the inclination to seperate food scraps from normal kitchen garbage to dump in the green bin as opposed to the garbage bin.

It's about time the landfill bin was collected fortnightly. I put a tiny bag in it once a week.

My recycling bin is almost full every fortnight as is the garden/veggie scraps bin on the alternate fortnight.

We need to reduce so much landfill. In our local council of Monash they use the food waste as fertiliser for farmers. Seems silly to just chuck this in landfill. Doesn't really add any extra time to just have it on the kitchen bench. Stops my kitchen garbage bin getting smelly too. Our food scrap bin can also take meat, tea bags, paper towel, etc.

We have a bag under the sink and collect soft plastics which I take back to Coles/Woolies once a week when I go.

It's really not hard, just a bit of organisation.

One of the worst suburbs in Melbourne for sure

  • Be careful, some councils and shires in Vic switch the size of your red bin if you accept a new enviro bin. I’ve seen it happen.

"For this financial year, residents will be charged $24 for the collection and disposal of the contents of the new green waste bin. This cost will appear as part of the waste charge on your 2021/22 rate notice, along with an $18.25 increase for waste management (this increase applies to all residential rates notices). As such, residents in stand-alone houses will see an overall increase of $42.25, taking the total waste charge to $222 for the 2021/22 financial year. Residents who opted for a Food and Garden Waste Bin prior to 2021 will automatically move to the three-bin waste management service charge in the 2021/22 rate assessment period." Also Maribyrnong Council comes top in terms of average residential rates and charges.

    • Top, as in twice as expensive as across the river?

      • Wouldn't be doubled.

But based on https://knowyourcouncil.vic.gov.au/publications, the "amount of rates charged on average for each property" in Maribyrnong is $2282.79 (2019-20), third in Metro Victoria. (still third if you deduct waste charges of $179.75)

Someone asked why their rates are significantly dearer for a Yarravillle property than a property in Brighton on bigger block with a house valued $3M.
"The average residential property value for the City of Bayside in FY20/21 is $1.45 million, with an average residential rate and charges plus waste charge of $2,210.42. The City of Maribyrnong’s average residential property value in FY20/21 is $676k, with an average residential rate and charges plus waste charge of $2,068.22." • Maribyrnong Council even regularly patrol their municipal residences and fine you if you haven’t registered your dogs.

Is this supposed to be a negative thing lol, I assume they also find you for not collecting its shit on footpaths and nature strips/local parks. Our of they catch you walking it without a leash attached.
You're required to anyways. Everyone should be registering their pets.

Possible exclusion to the rule would be crazy cat lady/man/goat/fridge or non corporeal entity etc.

  • I'm presuming this is only for Maribyrnong residents? What if you live close to Maribyrnong? I mean, Brimbank and Maribyrnong are pretty much neighbours, right?

    • Maribyrnong council looks after the entire Maribyrnong LGA which includes the suburb of Maribyrnong. You’d need to be in a suburb that’s part of the LGA to get this.

Otherwise maybe Brimbank council is doing something similar?

  • I didn't fin any info what they will do with the old bin. I would love to keep it for rain water or compost bin.
