    Yeah, nah.

I bought one of these years ago to replace an ageing clock/radio.
They told me it can play the radio and it was smaaaart.
Well, in order to play the radio, you have to create a routine that uses iHeartRadio.
It's so bloody unreliable. It probably fails to play about 30-40% of the time.
Just get no sound. No error message when it's the alarm (if you manually run the routine, it will might tell you it failed).
Sure, if I am awake, I can tell it to play the radio, but that's no good if I am still sleeping.

Mind you, I didn't try with the normal buzzer sounds - presume that would be normal since the sound would be local, as opposed to relying on streaming from the internet.

On the bright side, I get to sleep in quite a few days of the week.

Hey Google, play Smooth FM radio on TuneIn?

      • Don’t you have too be awake to talk to it?

        • No you can sleeptalk and Google will still obey your command.

    • haha i was just going to ask if this is any more reliable than the echo show - sound about just as bad so guess ill stick with the junk i have
At least the echo defaults to beeping when the radio fails (or sometimes does both lol)

  • why should I use this instead of my phone as a clock?
Is it a product looking for a customer who doesn't have a smartphone?

    • It does stuff other than just being a clock.

    • I think you need to use the google home app to setup

Why would anyone buy a clock then? So they have a display they can look at without carrying their phone with them everyone in the house.

This is essentially a display clock + a Google Nest Mini in one.

I thought the same but its more useful that I had imagined. I got one for each othe kids rooms and when they're all in the same house, I can tell the one in the kitchen "broadcast dinner is ready" and the kids (slowly) come and get their food - when you have one of them in an outdoor room, this is useful.

In addition to that, walking into the bedroom with hands full of washing or something you can tell google to turn on the light and don't have to drop everything to flick the switch or press a button. I also use mine for bedtime routine. I lay down with lights on, say "goodnigh" and it kicks off the following:

Set volume to 20% (so it doesn't shout at me)
Dim lights to "lights out" scene (kids bedrooms to 1%, main area to 10%, master bedroom off, Walk in robe to 10%)
      Tells me tomorrows weather
Tells me a joke (always goes for "what do you call a cavemans fart? a blast from the past" ??)
      Finally says goodnight

  • would this be good to use as a display for light switches for google home? I currently have to say "Hey google, turn on the lights". Would be good if I could just tap the screen to turn on the lights.

    • If you associate this unit with a room then it will have the controls for the lights associated with the same room available via a swipe. You can also use voice commands with it too.

    • I think most houses have those built in the walls? Usually by the door

  • Recent update (in the last 3 months or so) stopped allowing casting of Youtube music from the phone without premium subscription. Same feature works fine on the nest hub. The lenovo clock can still play youtube music using "Hey Google. Play music on youtube music" but just a small inconvinience if you want to cast your Youtube music.

  • I have this one … it doesn't hear as well as my old google mini

    Just no. Lenovo, go home.

You have a history of creating horrible horrible IoT junk that doesn’t work, including this.

Thanks for all the reviews everyone - I WON'T be purchasing based on these.

Love this group for this reason :)

  • Mines fine, works well, you need solid internet and its unreasonable to blame this for your connection problems.

Hey Google set a weekday alarm at 6:30am play Spotify

Better than a phone in the room as it removed temptation to check social media at 3am

  • For those that have this already - does the screen time out so it's not on all night? Already have too much light pollution in my room…

    • +1

It has a time out, but it doesn't completely turn off the screen. It does however go dim enough at night that I have to focus on it to read it at night.

    • +1

As Carnal says. It dims right down to barely visible at night. I believe it has 3 settings for the lowest light settings dimmest/normal/brighter.

Was going to buy this and did some research and ended up buying the Lenovo Smart Display for 94 delivered lol
