Pixel 6 vs Samsung Flip 3?

I know I know, these 2 phones couldn't be more different, but I want to hear what the community thinks.

Pixel 6 Flip 3
Vanilla Android New form factor
Better Cameras Comes with Galaxy Buds
Better Battery Life Available sooner
Better Resale Value
More reliable software updates

After 3 years, my OnePlus 6 is finally dying (battery doesn't last anymore), so I need something quite soon. What do you guys think, run on fumes until the Pixel 6 comes out or take a chance on an interesting Samsung product?

  • Pixel 6; I'm fine with the 'traditional' style of phones, I don't really see a need to get a folding-screen phone. Besides, the Pixel will probably be a tad cheaper than the Flip 3.

    • I can get the Flip 3 for about $1200 on the Samsung Education Store, which I believe is a similar price tag to the Pixel 6 when it comes out.

      • Even if the price was the same, I would probably still go for the Pixel 6. Generally, the less moving parts in a phone, the longer it's gonna last.

  • Any phone with “flip” in the name with that feature is a bit gimmicky. Hold out for the Pixel 6.

    • What about "fold"?

  • Wouldn't recommend a novelty phone as main device, especially if you don't upgrade often.

  • I think you'd want to end up comparing the Pixel 6 vs S21 FE (or even S22 depending on Pixel 6 timing) once both are announced.

The Flip/Fold seem like very specialty items.. not sure how they really sit in terms of everyday/general use.

  • of course flip.
    bar shape is soooooo old

Year 2017, I bought a Pixel 2 XL and wife got an iPhone X (10).
Year 2020, Google has stopped supporting Pixel 2XL with new version of Android, only security updates are provided.
iPhone X still gets the latest iOS from Apple, even iOS 15 will support iPhone X.
Wife got an iPhone 12 Max and I took her old phone, just to experience a change of phone.
iPhone X is fast, much faster and smoother than my Pixel 2 XL. All the apps work fine on it.
Battery is still 85%. I plan to use the phone for one more year, that will be a total of 5 years of the same phone use. At max, I'll change the battery as phone still feels very smooth and as good as any new phone.
iPhone 12 Max is faster in opening apps and maybe some games, however, for most games iPhone X is just fine. I thought its just me so gave the phone to few friends and most are of the opinion that there is no need to change except for getting the "New Phone feeling".

Can ANY Pixel/ Android last 5 years of use ? Google themselves stopped supporting their flagship after 3 years :)

I think iPhones are costlier to begin with, but surely a better investment if you can don't get the itch to change.
Wait for iPhone 13 would be my suggestion.

You are absolutely right. iPhones are much better value than android in this regard.

I am however heavily tied to the Android/Windows Ecosystem and I prefer to keep it that way. I know this personal choice comes at a cost and its one I'm willing to pay as it pays off in other ways (more flexible setups/devices). I'm also aware that the Flip 3 will probably have only half the usable life of the Pixel 6.

I've been using my s9 for 4 years and it's basically as good as new. Could comfortably go for 5 years I think. Or worst case scenario, I can just replace battery.

Just depends how you use it I guess. I have heard/read that Pixels are a bit hit and miss, and have also heard/read Iphones degrade pretty quickly after 2 years and have a lot of planned obsolescence in them.

At this stage really just depends on whether you use Apple or Android as they're functionally the same otherwise.

      • I'm not aware of Samsung ecosystem, does your S9 get the latest Android ?
iPhone X has the latest iOS and will certainly get the upcoming iOS.
In today's world hardware is secondary, its what latest software it can support and how smoothly it operates.
I'm not saying that my Pixel 2XL has stopped working, it still is good, however, very laggy, specially when compared to iPhone X.
Samsung does makes great phones, if you are happy with S9 it shows the quality that Samsung puts in.

        • Doesn't have latest software but doesn't seem to offer anything new. Phone is still smooth as butter for all apps though.

A benefit of Android is I can just download the newest version regardless and load it myself if I wanted to.

I'd argue both hardware and software have hit their peaks for phones though regardless. There is very little incentive to upgrade either. In most cases, a lot of new phones have actually lost features (for example, I have 3.5mm support and sd card support which none of the current flagships have).

    • Agree with this and with the prev comment: once you're locked in, it's a ballache to get out. I'd be curious to see what happens with the Pixel 6 and future google made SoC phones. They might be able to support them for longer if they control more of the parts inside. I got into Android at a time when I had more time to fluff around chasing work arounds and customisations. Now, I just want my phone to do what I need it to do and last for a while and I feel like iPhone is luring me in.

      • Completely agree. Apple are doing a few things right and for the first time in years I can confidently recommend the M1 Air to people as a solid laptop.

Custom Silicon is the missing piece of the puzzle. You can tell that the Pixel 5 was a 'filler' phone until Google had their own SoC ready. And just like when the M1 was announced, this will either be game changer or a huge let down.

Putting two unreleased devices (that nobody here has touched let alone used) in a pissing contest?

Yeah - that makes rational discussion and/or purchase decision.

  • Z Flip 3 I think would be stronger in terms of processing power as well?
    https://www.tomsguide.com/news/google-pixel-6-whitechapel-ch…

SoC on Pixel 6 is apparently, since it's not released yet, more comparable to 870 not 888. That said, I doubt it would make much of a difference for users like the article suggests.

If I were changing my phone this year (which I am not going to because my phone is doing OK), I'd go for Pixel 6 Pro probably. If it comes out OK that is.
My wife is probably going to change her phone this year. If she does, she's going for Flip 3 because it's fairly cheap if you grab it from the deals available right now (especially if you go on a plan). She was saying that her phone has been doing poorly and I don't think she'd enjoy "the Google experience" (she's used to Samsung phones).
