Repotting Bonsai Tree Help

Hi everyone, I am looking to repot a bonsai tree that I have (small to medium sized) and have found this pot at Bunnings. I am also going to need new rocks and soil/feed, so am happy to take any suggestions. I have looked around but found it confusing. I am looking to be able to get the rocks/soil delivered and in a small amount. Cheers :)

  • Amazon has this bonsai soil mix already premixed. If you are prime member it's only around $10 for 10l? Note they are slighly slower delivery these days.

  • I would find a local bonsai store and ask for what you need, if they deliver, or if you can do contactless pickup. You should typically avoid any bonsai specific trees or materials from bunnings.

  • +1

Google 'Gardening Australia Bonsai repotting' they have fact sheets as well as short videos which will help you OP.

  • Bunnings sell small bags of Bonsai soil too

Make sure when repotting, that your new pot isn't too much larger than your current one. When you repot, make sure you have a little piece of gauze over the drainage holes and some rocks along the bottom to help with drainage

Rocks/pebbles are not important on top they are really just for looks. They may help keep the soil moist for longer however bonsais require frequent watering anyway

    • I second that. I'm not a bonsai expert but my hubby has a lot of bonsais and I've been watching him repot every spring. He gets the same bonsai soil from Bunnings and we use it for even other plants that we keep indoors. You don't need to change pots every year, in fact, for a lot of his bonsais, he rarely changes the pot at all. The repotting is a time to give the root system a good shake, a little bit of trimming, and replace the old soil with new soil which has more nutrients. He does some careful trimming to some of his bonsais, and others he will just leave as is to be displayed and enjoyed throughout the year.
